Health and Stress: Physiological and Psychological Consequences of Stressful Life Events

Abstract :
In order to survey the impact of stressor events on physical and mental health, the Life Event Questionnaire (LEQ), and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), were administered on a random sample of 392 male and female undergraduate students of the Islamic Azad University. Findings obtained by statistical methods showed a significant relationship between stress and mental and physical health. As regards sex, no significant difference was observed between male and female students undergoing stress. Moreover, results revealed a significant effect of stress on physical health, whereas its effect on psychological well-being of both sexes was found to be insignificant. It is concluded that due to the fatal effects of stressors, effective prevention measures need to be implemented to minimize the illeffects of stress on the physical and mental well-being of people
