در پادشاهی شیرویه در شاهنامه یکی از بزرگان «اشتاگشسپ» نام دارد که باوجوداینکه تاکنون ویراستاران و گزارندگان شاهنامه¬ تردیدی در درستیِ آن نداشته¬اند، اما نقش، جایگاه و ریختِ نام او در دستنویس¬های شاهنامه و نیز در منابع تاریخی با آشفتگی زیادی همراه است. بررسی دقیق منابع برای بازسازی نامِ درست و شناخت درست¬ترِ این شخص سه فایده دارد: دانش تاریخ ساسانی را گسترش می¬دهد، به ویرایش شاهنامه کمک می¬کند و کمکی است در نام¬شناسی و ریشه¬شناسیِ تاریخی ساسانی. در این جستار ریخت¬های گوناگون نام «اشتاگشسپ»، در شاهنامه و منابع تاریخی، شناسایی و سپس ارزیابی و سنجش شده تا ریختِ درستِ این نام در خدای¬نامه، شاهنامۀ ابومنصوری و شاهنامۀ فردوسی، گمانه¬زنی و بازسازی شود. چند دلیل برای برتری¬دادنِ «اسپادگشنسپ» بر «استاد/ اشتادگشنسپ» ارائه شده و می¬بایست فردوسی «اسپاگشسپ» به-کار برده باشد، پس این ریخت در تمام دستنویس¬ها، تحریف یا تصحیف شده¬ است. درنتیجه پیشنهاد می¬شود در شاهنامه «اشتاگشسپ» و «اشتاد» به «اسپاگشسپ» و «اسپاد» ویرایش شود.
In the kingdom of Široyah, in the Shahnameh, one of the elders is called "Aštāgošasp", although the editors and Commentators of the Shahnameh have not doubted its correctness, but the role, position and form of his name in the manuscripts of the Shahnameh and also in historical sources are very confusing. A careful examination of the sources to reconstruct the correct name and to know this person more accurately has three benefits: it expands the knowledge of Sasanian history, it helps to edit the Shahnameh, and it is an aid in Sasanian nomenclature and historical etymology. In this research, various forms of the name "Aštāgošasp" in the Shahnameh and historical sources have been identified and then evaluated and measured in order to speculate and reconstruct the correct form of this name in the Xodāynameh, Shahnameh of Abu Mansoori and Shahnameh of Ferdowsi. Several reasons have been given for preferring "Aspādgošnasp" over "Astād/Aštādgošnasp" and Ferdowsi must have used "Aspāgošnasp", so this form has been distorted or corrected in all manuscripts. As a result, it is suggested to edit "Astāgošasp" and "Aštād" to "Aspāgošasp" and "Aspād" in the Shahnameh.
