  • Authors Guide

The Iranian Journal of Applied Animal Science (IJAS) is an open access journal that provides rapid publication of papers on animal science. Iranian Journal of Applied Animal Science (IJAS) is published in English in one volume of 4 issues per year, as a printed journal and in electronic version. This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. The Journal welcomes the submission of manuscripts that meet the general criteria of significance and scientific excellence. Papers will be published approximately 3-6 months after acceptance.

Electronic submission of manuscripts is strongly encouraged, provided that the text, tables, and figures are included in a single Microsoft Word file.

Submit manuscripts as online at online submission.  A manuscript acknowledgment including manuscript number will be sent by email to the corresponding author

The cover letter should include the corresponding author's full address and should be in an e-mail message sent to the Chief-Editor, with the file. The authors may also suggest three potential reviewers and scientists able to provide expert review of the submitted manuscripts. Obviously, IJAS Editorial Board and Chief-Editor reserve the right to use these or other reviewers of their choice and may designate other reviewers.

    Article Types

Three types of manuscripts may be submitted:

    • Research Articles (Full-Length Original Scientific Papers): Most papers published in IJAS are Research Articles. These should describe new and carefully confirmed findings, and experimental procedures should be given in sufficient detail for others to verify the work. The length of a full paper should be the minimum required to describe and interpret the work clearly.
    • Short Communications: A Short Communication is suitable for recording the results of complete small investigations or giving details of new models or hypotheses, innovative methods, techniques or apparatus. The style of main sections need not conform to that of full-length papers. Short Communications are 2 to 4 printed pages in length.
    • Review Articles: Submissions of Review Articles and perspectives covering topics of current interest are welcome and encouraged. Review Articles are also peer-reviewed. Manuscripts submitted to this section may cover new developments in a field, describe the evolution of a currently accepted management practice, propose changes in management based on current research, or describe procedures. Clear distinctions should be made between firmly established practices and unresolved questions. Also, the use of copyrighted materials must be by permission of the copyright holders. Author(s) is (are) responsible for obtaining copyright permissions.

    Review Process

All manuscripts are reviewed by editor and members of the Editorial Board or qualified outside reviewers. Contributions to Iranian Journal of Applied Animal Science (IJAS) must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Board Office. Decisions will be made as rapidly as possible, and the journal strives to return reviewers’ comments to authors within 6-8 weeks after manuscript reception. A reviewed paper returned to authors for revision must be returned to the editor within 14 days (two weeks). If not, the paper may be treated as a new submission. Under unusual circumstances, editors may extend the revision deadline beyond 14 days. The Editorial Board and Chief-Editor will re-review corrected (revised) manuscripts that are accepted pending revision. The Chief-Editor will notify the author(s) of the final decision of acceptance or rejection. It is the goal of the IJAS to accept/reject manuscripts within 12 weeks after submission including:

    • 6-8 weeks for manuscript reception, pre-evaluation of submitted manuscript by Chief-Editor and reviewing process by reviewers
    • 2 weeks for possible revisions by author(s)
    • 2 weeks for checking of revised manuscript and final decision (acceptance or rejection) by Editorial Board and Chief-Editor
    • 3-6 months for preparation of galley proof by journal office, galley proof checking by corresponding author and upload of paper as online journal website.

    Manuscript Format

    1) Format for Research Articles

Papers must be written in English. Authors should prepare their manuscripts in Microsoft Word 2003 and send them using the fewest size possible to facilitate the review and editing processes. Files created in Office 2007 should be saved as Office 2003 before submission for compatibility with our composition software. Papers that do not follow the form and style of the Iranian Journal of Applied Animal Science (IJAS) may be rejected without review.

Manuscripts should be typed single-spaced (in Microsoft Word 2003 version only) with lines and pages numbered consecutively, using Times New Roman font at 10 points. All portions including tables, figures and references of the manuscript must be typed single-spaced and all pages numbered starting from the first page.

Major headings are all capitals, boldfaced, and consisting of Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion (or Results and Discussion), Conclusions (optional), Acknowledgement (optional) and References.

    • Title

The Title should be a brief phrase describing the contents of the paper. Under the Title, names of author(s) should be typed upper and lowercase (e.g., A.R. Seidavi) in boldface. Institutional addresses (affiliations) are displayed below the author name(s). The Title should follow the author's full names and affiliations, the name of the corresponding author along with telephone, and E-mail address. The Title should be in boldface; the first letter of the article title and proper names are capitalized and the remainder of the Title is lowercase.

    • Running Title (Head Title)

Please insert suggested "Running Title" (Head Title) of your manuscript (no more than 50 characters with spaces) in the beginning of your manuscript.

    • Abstract

The Abstract should be informative and completely self-explanatory, briefly present the topic, state the scope of the experiments, indicate significant data, and point out major findings and conclusions. The Abstract should be up to 300 words in length. Complete sentences, active verbs, and the third person should be used, and the abstract should be written in the past tense. Standard nomenclature must be used and abbreviations should be avoided. No literature should be cited.

    • Key words

Following the abstract, about 3 to 6 Key Words that will provide indexing references should be listed.

Each abbreviation should be spelled out and introduced in parentheses the first time it is used in the text. Only recommended SI units should be used. Standard abbreviations (such as ATP and DNA) need not be defined.

    • Introduction

The Introduction should provide a clear statement of the problem, the relevant literature on the subject, and the proposed approach or solution. It should be understandable to colleagues from a broad range of scientific disciplines.

    • Materials and Methods

Materials and Methods should be complete enough to allow experiments to be reproduced. However, only truly new procedures should be described in detail; previously published procedures should be cited, and important modifications of published procedures should be mentioned briefly. Subheadings could be used. Methods in general use need not be described in detail.

    • Results and Discussion

Results and Discussion can be presented together or separately.

Results should be presented with clarity and precision. The results should be written in the past tense when describing findings in the authors' experiments. Previously published findings should be written in the present tense. Results should be explained, but largely without referring to the literature.

The Discussion should interpret the findings in view of the results obtained in this and in past studies on this topic. The Results and Discussion sections can include subheadings.

    • Conclusion

State the conclusions in a few sentences at the end of the paper.

    • Acknowledgment

The Acknowledgments of people, grants, funds, etc should be brief.

Tables should be kept to a minimum and be designed to be as simple as possible. Tables must be created using the Microsoft Word 2003 table feature and inserted in the manuscript after the references section. Tables are to be typed single-spaced throughout, including headings and footnotes. Each Table should be on a separate page, numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and supplied with a heading and a legend. Tables should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. The same data should not be presented in both Table and graph form or repeated in the text.

Figures Figure legends should be typed in numerical order on a separate page. Graphics should be prepared using Applications capable of generating high resolution GIF, TIFF, or JPEG before pasting in the Microsoft Word manuscript file. Use Arabic numerals to designate Figures and upper case letters for their parts (Figures 1). Begin each legend with a title and include sufficient description so that the figure is understandable without reading the text of the manuscript. Information given in legends should not be repeated in the text.

References: In the text, a reference identified by means of an author’s name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses. When there are more than two authors, only the first author’s name should be mentioned, followed by ‘et al’. In the event that an author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the reference, both in the text and in the reference list, should be identified by a lower case letter like ‘a’ and ‘b after the date to distinguish the works.

    Example (in the Text)

Shivazad (2000), Seidavi et al. (2003), (Bizhannia, 1983), (Mirhosseini and Seidavi, 2009), (Shivazad, 2000; Seidavi, 2003), (Mirhosseini, 1998; Smith, 1987a; Smith, 1987b; Light, 1993; Light, 1995), (Seidavi et al. 2001)

References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. Journal names must be written as abbreviated. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy of the references.

    2) Format for Short Communications

Short Communications should present a complete study that is more limited in scope than is found in full-length papers. Short Communications are reports of limited experiments that test a timely, original hypothesis of importance to some area of animal science. The manuscript should be no more than 4 journal pages in length. The manuscript may report negative results. Reports must contain a hypothesis, objectives, sufficient detail in methodology for repetition of the work, results with brief discussion, and references. The items of manuscript preparation listed above apply to Short Communications with the following differences: (1) Abstracts are limited to 250 words; (2) Results and Discussion should be combined into a single section.

    3) Format for Review Manuscripts

Manuscripts should begin with a concise description of the topic, followed by a critical evaluation of the important references. Review manuscripts, whether solicited or unsolicited, will be subject to a stringent review process. Review manuscripts should follow the general format outlined in the Style and Form when appropriate and include brief subheadings to separate main ideas. Review manuscripts may include tables, figures, and photographs. A Conclusions section should be included in most cases.

    Galley Proofs and Reprints

Accepted manuscripts are forwarded by the Chief-Editor to the editorial office for technical editing and typesetting. The manuscript is then typeset, figures reproduced, and author proofs prepared. Electronic galley proofs will be sent (e-mail attachment) to the corresponding author as a PDF file and should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Although the proof appears in a journal format, it should be considered a galley proof; page layout may change when the article is paginated into an issue. Author proofs should be read carefully and checked against the typed manuscript, because responsibility for proofreading lies with the author(s). Corrections must be returned by e-mail. Corrections to the proof should be made neatly and clearly in the margins of the proof. The Comments feature in Adobe Acrobat may be used to insert changes and comments within the proof PDF. With the exception of typographical or minor clerical errors, no changes will be made in the manuscript at the proof stage. Since, IJAS will be published freely online (to attract a wide audience), authors will have free electronic access to the full text (in both HTML and PDF) of the published paper. Authors can freely download the PDF file from which they can print unlimited copies of their articles.

    Copyright

Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published before (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a thesis) that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors agree to automatic transfer of the copyright to the publisher, that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holders, that written permission of the copyright holder has been obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources (including tables, graphs, figures, and illustrations), and that any costs associated with obtaining this permission are the authors’ responsibility.

Therefore, the authors guarantee that their papers have not been and will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright owners, that the rights of third parties will not be violated, and that the publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation. Authors wishing to include figures or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

    Conflict of Interest
Authors are requested to evident whether impending conflicts do or do not exist. If an organization encompasses any financial interest in the outcome of the study, the authors are appealed to provide a declaration that have full access to all the data in the study and take complete responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis. All studies (if necessary based on the type and subject), must be approved by the relevant Ethics Committee/ Institution review board of the respective institutions. Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to be originated by the authors. A copyright transfer agreement is signed by the corresponding author, upon the acceptance of the manuscript, on behalf of all authors, for publication to be legally responsible towards the Journal ethics and privacy policy.
