        This paper aimed to explore the ways in which three Moroccan ELT textbooks currently used in second year Baccalaureate public high schools represented gender. It also aimed to identify the extent to which these textbooks succeeded in avoiding instances of biased and stereotypical gender representations of female and male figures. The study was conducted based on the theoretical framework of the Standards-Based Approach. It adopted content analysis as the main instrument for data collection and analysis that combines both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings indicated that these textbooks contain instances of biased gender representations regarding frequency of appearance, visibility, space, firstness and occupations attributed to female and male characters in texts, dialogues, exercises and images. The paper concluded with a set of implications suggesting ways in which gender inequalities could be avoided in future Moroccan ELT textbooks. پرونده مقاله

        This content analysis study, employing a multimodal perspective and critical visual analysis, set out to analyze gender representations in Top Notch series, one of the highly used ELT textbooks in Iran. For this purpose, six images were selected from these series and analyzed in terms of ‘representational’, ‘interactive’ and ‘compositional’ modes of meanings. The result indicated that there are no stereotypical predictions of any genders, and that both female and male social actors were represented on an equal footing. The corollary of this critical image analysis was the implications which are of vital importance for material developers as well as those responsible for choosing language teaching in general and ELT materials in particular. پرونده مقاله

        There is a type of discourse analytical research that dealing with the way social power misuse, dominance and imbalancement are approved, replicated and resisted via text and talk in the political and social context, this kind of research is called Critical Discourse Analysis. Analysts in the field of critical discourse aim to understand, expose and ultimately to resist social imbalancement. This study investigated gender representation in political sections of two Persian newspapers (Jame Jam and Hamshahri) and two English newspapers (Tehran Times and Iran Daily). To attain the purpose of the study, 20 articles (10 Persian and 10 English articles) were selected from the newspapers to be investigated Fairclough's (2001) three-dimensional model was selected and adopted as the model of study.Five factors were selected and art and culture sections of the newspapers were investigated using these factors, (i.e. characters of male and female), social roles of them, titles of male and female, order of appearance, and finally the pictorial representation of both genders. The results demonstrated that there are not any significant differences in gender representation in Persian and English newspapers. The findings also demonstrated that regarding all of these factors, males dominated females. In other words, the number and percent of males′ representation were more than females′. پرونده مقاله

        This study was carried out to investigate aspects of gender as represented in one of the currently used English language series in Iran, namely, Top Notch. In effect, the study analyzed the series in terms of nine major aspects of gender: female and male’s characters, female and male’s pictorial representations, female and male’s titles, activities, firstness of female and male in the mixed gender dialogues. To this end, Fairclough’s (2001) three dimensional model was adopted in order to extract the ideology behind these textbooks.
