        The applicability of second language instruction to various situations including academic settings provides great opportunities for students and researchers to access fresh sources of knowledge. This is extended to the majority of Iranian students receiving courses such as English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) who may not find instruction compatible with their needs and aspirations. The present study intends to provide an insight into the current status of ESP and EAP courses within the Iranian context. To this end, 120 male and female university postgraduate students majoring in various non-English fields were selected and given a survey questionnaire to report on their needs and on the quality of the language courses presented to them. The results of the statistical analysis showed that 44.2 % of students believe that listening comprehension is the most required skill followed by reading, speaking and writing skills at 41.7%, 39.2% and 17% of frequency respectively. Meanwhile, the most satisfying ESP and EAP skills currently presented at universities were found to be listening, speaking and reading, in order of preference. In fact, it seems that the current instructional trend ought to be discontinued or modified in various ways. Finally, a comprehensive analytical analysis of the needs and components of each skill has been provided, discussing the potential of the current research for improving ESP and EAP instruction inside Iran. پرونده مقاله

        Although most researchers have recently considered the role of test-taking strategies as one of the most vital factors in test taking process, it has been ignored by most EFL teachers in educational and academic settings including Iran. Because of the importance of test-taking strategies in EFL learners’ performance in tests, this research was set out to examine what strategies Iranian EFL test takers employed in reading comprehension tests. Furthermore, the present paper aimed at finding any possible relationship between test-taking strategies and test takers’ performance on reading comprehension tests. Discovering the best predictors of EFL reading test performance among several categories of test-taking strategies was also investigated. To this end, 135 EFL students were chosen based on their availability. All of the students were female, majoring in different fields of study. Three kinds of materials including multiple-choice reading comprehension tests, a questionnaire, and interviews were utilized to investigate the research questions. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Correlation, and stepwise regression. The results showed a significant, positive, but low correlation between the students’ total reading score and planning and also monitoring strategies. Furthermore, planning strategy proved to be a predictor of English reading comprehension test. پرونده مقاله

        The purpose of this case study is to shed light on differences between the speech of male and female students in presenting a lecture in academic settings. It also aimed to discover which gender more follow essential steps in line with language management. This qualitative study discussed the discrepancies from multiple perspectives containing standard form, using grammar, pronunciation and intonation, using synonyms, expanding the topics, and conversational style. In addition, to consider these components, this research attempts to discover which gender follows different phases to prepare a lecture before presenting it. This qualitative study was conducted throughout observation protocol, writing diary, and semi-structured interviews consisting of seven Iranian participants who have General English course with ages ranging from 19-25. To sum up, the researchers concluded that female students outperformed in the whole process of this inquiry. The study tries to provide insight to genders to understand each other's discrepancies which is a need and act as a key to better communication. پرونده مقاله
