چکیده مقاله :
In recent years, a significant number of urban design and architecture projects, such as multi-purpose urban complexes, have been conducted with the aim of creating quality public spaces in Iran. However, these spaces do not often provide an acceptable quality of public spaces. One of the main causes of this issue is a failure to incorporate residents’ opinions into the design process of public spaces. The current study used the placemaking approach to develop a user-centred design framework for facilitating the implementation of successful cinema complexes as public spaces in Iran. Using three cinemas in Tabriz, a north-western city in Iran, as cases, based on three concepts of “successful public place”, “the power of 10”, and “creative placemaking” which all are the concepts proposed by PPS institute to generate the vitality of the urban public spaces, a comprehensive model for designing a successful cinema complex has been developed. The relative success of the studied cinemas was statistically evaluated based on four factors of a successful public space which are introduced by PPS: access and linkages, comfort and image of a public space perceived by the experience of being there, uses and activities, and sociability. According to the social and cultural structure of Tabriz, the findings of the study identified sixteen spaces and six events that can affect its success if they are considered in the architectural design process of a cinema complex. The developed framework can address the gap which exists in designing a successful and vibrant cinema complex.
