Insoluble dietary fibers play an important role in improving growth performance and gut health in poultry. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of micronized lignocellulose (Arbocel®) supplementation in the diet on performance, intestinal morphology, and microbial populations in the small intestine of broiler chickens. A total of 240 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were allocated in a completely randomized design to three dietary treatments with four replicates each and reared for 42 days. Treatments included: mash diet (control), mash diet + lignocellulose, and pelleted diet + lignocellulose. Inclusion of lignocellulose in the pelleted diet improved body weight and feed conversion ratio compared to the control (P<0.05). Birds fed pelleted diets also showed the highest water intake during the entire experimental period (P<0.05). Examination of internal organ weights indicated that pelleted diets increased relative heart weight and decreased relative gizzard weight (P<0.05). Histomorphometric analysis of the duodenum revealed longer villi in birds fed pelleted diets compared to those receiving mash diets (P < 0.05). Microbial analysis of the jejunum and ileum showed a reduction in Escherichia coli populations in the jejunum of birds fed pelleted diets, while lactobacilli and total microbial counts were not significantly affected (P<0.05). Overall, the results indicate that supplementation of micronized lignocellulose in pelleted diets can enhance growth performance and intestinal health and may be recommended as an effective fiber additive in broiler nutrition.
