Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between self-perception and suicidal ideations in individuals with gender dysphoria disorder based on the mediating role of fear of negative evaluation.
Methodology: The research method was correlational and structural equation modeling (SEM). The study population included all men and women with gender dysphoria disorder in Tehran between April and September 2024, of which 267 people were selected as a sample using a convenience sample method based on the research criteria. Data collection tools included the Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale (Beck et al, 1988), Self-perception questionnaire (Pourhossein, 2012) and Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (Leary, 1983).
Findings: The direct coefficients showed that the direct effect of self-perception on suicidal ideations and fear of negative evaluation was significant and negative. Another finding of the study showed that the direct effect of fear of negative evaluation on suicidal ideations was significant and positive. The indirect coefficients showed that the indirect effect of self-perception on suicidal ideations of individuals with gender dysphoria disorder, with the mediating role of fear of negative evaluation, was significant and negative. Finally, the obtained fit indices showed that the proposed research model has a good fit (CFI=0.99, NFI=0.98, IFI=0.99, GFI=0.99, RMSEA=0.039).
Conclusion: Accordingly, fear of negative evaluation can be considered as an important approach in reducing suicidal ideations in individuals with gender dysphoria disorder.
