Rhetorical Patterns in Abstracts Published in English by Iranian Scholars and Native Speakers of English in academic Journals

Writing, especially academic writing, as a multi-purpose and challenging activity is used in diverse environments such as academic settings and for different determinations such as writing research articles (hence, RAs) to publish in national and international journals. This study aimed at investigating rhetorical patterns (moves) in abstracts published in English by Iranian scholars in Iranian journals in contrast to the abstracts published by native speakers of English in ISI journals. To this end, 10 abstracts in each discipline, totaling 60, were selected by convenient sampling procedure from six disciplines including nursing and midwifery in medical sciences; translation and psychology in humanities; and computer and civil engineering in the engineering sciences. Patterns were determined through qualitative investigations and note-taking. Findings showed that there are some differences between the rhetorical patterns used by the two groups. The findings of this study can be used to teach non-native speakers how to abide by the patterns commonly used by native speakers.
