120 one-day-old broiler chickens of the Ras 308 commercial strain were randomly placed in 4 treatments including control, 1, 2 and 4 liters of barberry juice in 1000 liters of water. The length of the test period was 42 days, which included the initial period (from the 7th day to the end of the 21st day) and the growth period (from the 22nd day to the end of the 42nd day). According to the results, treatment 1 was associated with a decrease in fertilizer consumption, and treatments 2 and 3 were associated with an increase in fertilizer consumption compared to the control group, and this difference was significant only between treatments 1 and 3 (P<0.05). The best breeding performance with the lowest conversion rate was also obtained in treatment 1. Improvements in various parameters were observed in blood parameters, but the only significant factor was albumin values in treatment 3, which showed a significant decrease compared to the control group (P<0.05). In examining the length of the villi, all the treatments had a significant increase in the first 10%, and the highest increase was related to treatment 1 (P<0.05). Also, treatment 1 showed the highest significant value (P<0.05) in the depth of the leaves. It can be concluded that the use of 1 liter of barberry juice per 1000 liters of water in the poultry diet can have positive effects on weight gain and improve the performance of broiler chickens. Different pesticides have been used to control pests of barberry (Berberis vulgaris) in south Khorasan province, Iran. Due to use barberry in both raw and cooked, identification and quantification of residues of common pesticides (Diazinon, Oxydemeton-methyl and Phosalone) in barberry was monitored by using GC-MS. To achieve a suitable method for extraction and purification, four valid methods such as QuEChERS Extraction, Static extraction, Changing PH and Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) were used. To reduce matrix effects in measurements, the addition standard used and the resulting signal level from GC by using pesticides standards calibration curves were measured. Extraction with acetonitrile solvent and scan mode of GC-MS showed that most of the barberries were contaminated by the pesticides. Four kind of different extraction method were compared with each other in spiked distilled water and then spiked barberry samples. The SPE extraction seemed to give slightly lower recoveries for the sample tested. Although Changing PH and Static extraction were so quick, but had the worst results. The results obtained confirmed that QuEChERS Extraction method may be used to extract pesticide residues from barberry. Other pesticides also found with a very low concentration by GCMS full scan method, such as Dimethoate, Dursban & Acetamyprid, that may has been used in the region and came as drift. Today, traditional and complementary medicine has a special place in the treating of many disorders and diseases. Valuable medicinal plants grow in Iran due to the special climate diversity. The barberry plant (Berberis vulgaris) is one of the most important and prominent plant species and has many therapeutic properties. Berberine, as the most important barberry alkaloid in the root, has a suitable concentration for extraction and utilization and introducing it as a natural substance with pharmacological properties is the aim of this research. The roots of the barberry plant were collected from Tehran city and ground after drying at ambient temperature and away from sunlight. Methanol was used to extract the berberine present in the root of this plant. After filtering, the methanolic extract was used to identify berberine using an HPLC device with a DAD detector. The resulting chromatogram shows the proper separation of barberry root extract and berberine peak peaks compared to the berberine standard, which was clearly separated and identified. The amount of berberine in barberry root was determined according to the calibration curve of 1.44%. Based on the obtained results and a review of the therapeutic and medicinal properties of native Iranian barberry, it is important to determine the amount of the effective substance in the context of its use in the prevention and treatment of various disorders and diseases. Due to the synthetic and chemical nature of antibiotics and the phenomenon of body resistance against them, using herbal compounds to cure infections and diseases are being noticed a lot, today. In this study, extracting the herbs was done by soaking in 80% ethanol. Berberis Vulgaris (Barberry root)by HPTLC and Foeniculum vulgare (F. vulgare). Mill (Fennel seed)by GC/MS methods were analyzed. Disk diffusion and micro dilution methods were used to detection of the antibacterial effect in triplicate. Minimal of inhibitory concentration (MIC) between the antibacterial effects of Berberis vulgaris (B. vulgaris) and F. vulgare Mill extracts individually and combined with nisin and sodium diacetate showed a significant difference against Yersinia enterocolitica. Among the studied factors, nisin had the most antibacterial effect and followed by the extract of B. vulgaris and F. vulgare Mill respectively. The antibacterial effect of sodium diacetate against Y. enterocolitica was the lowest. These results were almost consistent with those achieved by disk diffusion method. Our results indicated that MIC of sodium diacetate and nisin combined with the extracts of B. vulgaris and F. vulgare mill had a remarkable decrease compared to each one's effect individually (P<0.05). Results were similar about minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC), which showed simultaneous usage of sodium diacetate with these extracts can decrease the use of sodium diacetate a lonely and its complications. Moreover, combined consumption of extracts with nisin decreases the use of the extracts and the resultant organoleptic changes. Manuscript profile

Background: Cerebral ischemia is a major global problem that can lead to the loss of cortical pyramidal cells following ischemic / reperfusion injury. Recent studies have examined the neuroprotective role of barberry hydroalcoholic extract in acute ischemia. Methods: This study was performed experimentally on 18 male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into 3 groups of control ، ischemic and experimental. The ischemic model was performed by bilateral ligation of the common carotid arteries for 20 minutes and then blood was restored. In the experimental group, barberry hydroalcoholic extract was injected intraperitoneally for 7 days before ischemia. After 4 days of ischemia, the rat’s brains were removed and stained by applying chrysalis fast violet method. The number of pyramidal cells of the prefrontal cortex of all three groups was counted by Imaging-Pro-Plus software. Then, statistical analysis of the data was performed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: The results showed that 20 minutes of ischemia significantly reduced the number of pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex, so that there was a significant difference in the number of these cells between the ischemic group and the control and experimental groups. However, this difference between the control group and the experimental group was not significant. Conclusion: This study reveals that hydro alcoholic extract of barberry has a neurotropic effect on the pyramidal cells of the prefrontal cortex and can be considered as a new candidate for treating of ischemic brain injuries.
