Ilm-ol-Ma’a:ni, as one of the main branches of Islamic rhetoric, has a wide scale relation with linguistics and theories on modern literary criticism and its branches. M. A. Halliday is one of the renowned researchers of the school of linguistics in Britain whose “systematic functional grammar” (SFG) has many similarities with rhetorical discussions of “Xabar”, “Insha”, “connotative meaning”, … of Ilm-ol-Ma’a:ni. This paper intends to use the “padeshah va kanizak” - an allegorical story of Mawlana Jalal ad - Din - to study and introduce similarities and overlays between rhetorical discussion of “connotative meaning” and Halliday’s systematic functional grammar. As a subcategory of grammatical metaphors, metaphors of transitivity are discussed in Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar. This article attempts to compare metaphors of transitivity in two of Saadi's literary genres – didactic and romantic. Findings of the study, conducted in a descriptive-analytical method, are as follows: 1) Surprisingly, the surface structure of clauses from Saadi's romantic poetry indicates a higher frequency of material processes over others, followed by relational processes by far. In didactic poetry, at surface structure level, material and relational processes exceeded others, both having been used almost in the same frequency. Next frequently used process type is mental. However, the analysis of clauses suggests that a considerable number of clauses from Saadi's poetry are, substantially, mental or behavioral at deep structure level. This depicts human's internal emotions thoroughly, but, when carried into surface structure level, these processes are transformed into material and relational processes under metaphor of transitivity. It seems that, for romantic poems, the poet has been trying to further visualize and perceptualize the internal emotions of characters or lovers in his stories significantly. The transformation of mental and behavioral processes into material and relational ones is significantly more frequent in Saadi's romantic poetry compared to his didactic poetry. 2) Considering the fact that a segment of metaphors of transitivity in Saadi's poetry are either indicative of metonymy or contain secondary connotations construed in rhetoric, it seems so that the metaphor of transitivity can help literary researchers rethink a number of concepts related to semantics and eloquence. Abstract      Halliday emphasizes on ideational, interpersonal and textural metafunctions in systematic functional linguistics, which can be useful for analyzing sentences of literary texts and understanding special styles of poets or writers. Shahnameh has the potential of being studied in different fields like linguistics, thus the writer analyzes styles of the stories of Iraj and Rostam and Shaghad, based on Halliday’s theory. This paper is an attempt to study the problem of different processes, interpersonal metafunctions, and textural cohesion in stories of Iraj and Rostam and Shaghad. The results of this study show that among all the used processes, material process has the highest frequency in both stories, which indicate concrete events and actions used in the scenes.  In non-structural part of textual metafunction, grammatical and lexical cohesions cause text connections and coordination. In grammatical cohesion, conjunctions and in lexical cohesion reiteration, repetition element has the highest frequency in both stories. Past form of the verbs are used and subjects are often obvious and indicative mood which emphasizes on truthfulness of propositions and certainty of the text has the most frequency in these stories. Investigating and adapting all three semantic layers of Halliday’s theory in the stories of Iraj and Rostam and Shaghad emphasizes on the unified, integrated, coherent structure of both texts. Abstract  Since Halliday’s functional grammar provides the possibility of studying texts as a complete consistent whole it proves quite efficient in conducting literary studies.  This branch of modern grammar relies on three main metafunctions including ideational, interpersonal, and textual ones, and is concerned with inspection of texts as well as examining the role of language in representation of reality, interpersonal interactions, and meaning of texts. Ideational metafunction is further divided into six kinds of processes which include material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential ones.  In ancient epic works due to the fact that the composer made an effort to create an objective palpable image from a national heroic tale he employed material processes more than other process types, however in new epics considering the change of coordinates in human societies, the composer depending on the form he selects for his tale may use different processes in his work.  Mehdi Akhavan Sales who is the most distinguished contemporary epic composer had made use of mental and verbal processes the most, in the eighth trial poem.  The narrative form of the tale, presence of a naqqal in the tale, and then the presence of the poet as naqqal or the second narrator, the descriptive dominance of the structure of the tale, and also the connection of the tale with Rostam’s seventh trial are the chief reasons for employing these kinds of processes in the eighth trial.
