The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of attachment therapy with motivational therapy in reducing slippage, recurrence, craving and continued substance abstinence in patients with substance-dependent borderline personality disorder. The present study was a quasi-experimental interventional study with pre-test post-test design with control group and 3-month follow-up. The statistical population of all substance abusers with borderline personality disorder referred to addiction treatment centers in Kermanshah city, 60 of whom were selected by convenience sampling method. Ross Adult Attachment Questionnaire (RASS Adult Attachment, 1996), Gashtasbi Asl et al.’s Borderline Personality Disorder (2017), Miller and Tonikan’s Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness (1996), McMullen Addiction Thoughts (1990), researcher-made questionnaire on recurrence, craving, slip and abstinence, Motivational intervention of Transtheoretical model of change (Procheska and D. Clemente, 1990) and Attachment treatment protocol (Jahanbakhsh et al., 2011) was used. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance. The results showed that attachment therapy and motivational therapy significantly decreased the slip, recurrence and craving of patients and increased the continuity of abstinence. Attachment therapy and motivational therapy had an effect on the rate of slip, relapse, craving and persistence of patients in the follow-up test. The rate of changes in slip, relapse, craving and abstinence scores was higher in those who received attachment therapy than those who received motivational therapy. Attachment therapy is more effective in reducing slip, relapse, craving, and continued drug use than motivational therapy. The results showed that both intervention methods were effective in improving the consumption of people with borderline personality disorder. However, the effect of addiction treatment-based therapy in people with borderline personality disorder is more effective than attachment therapy than motivational therapy. Manuscript profile

Among mental illnesses, borderline personality disorder is one of the most common disorders in medical settings. On the other hand, despite the fact that patients with this disorder form a heterogeneous group (Hoprich, 2017), they also have common features that are the most important. They are obvious impulsivity and instability in the three areas of interpersonal relationships, mood and self-image. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of mentalization therapy and emotion therapy treatment in reducing the symptoms of borderline personality disorder. This study was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test and follow-up with a control group. The statistical population in this study included all women with borderline personality disorder symptoms referred to counseling centers in Qom in the age range of 18-35 and from August to October 1399, from which 60 people were selected by availability and in two groups. An experiment and a control group were assigned. All three groups were interviewed and tested before and after the intervention with the Milon-3 questionnaire (Millon, 2000) and according to DSM-5 criteria. Then, both experimental groups underwent subjectivization therapy (Bateman and Fonagy, 2016) and emotion therapy McCullough, 2003) in 8 sessions of 90 minutes, one session per week, and the control group was placed on a waiting list. The results of data analysis were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS software version 26 and the results showed that both treatments are effective in reducing the symptoms of borderline personality disorder and mentalization treatment is more effective than emotion therapy. . Also, the results of this effect in the follow-up test remained stable for two months. Therefore, it can be concluded that mentalization therapy along with drug therapy can be used for patients with borderline personality disorder. Manuscript profile

Purpose:  Borderline personality characteristics can cause many problems in the life of people with these characteristics. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to design an integrative pathological model and treatment and determining its effectiveness on emotional instability among borderline individuals. Methodology: The present study is a mixed research (qualitative and quantitative). In the qualitative stage, Clarke & Braun (2006) thematic analysis approach was used. The context of the research in qualitative stage was the texts related to borderline individuals’ injuries, sample size was the 25 reference texts that were selected in a purposeful manner. At this stage, after extracting the spectrum of injuries with the use of specialized panel group, the required treatments for the spectrum of injuries were determined and an integrated treatment package with an agreement coefficient of 0.94 was designed. In the quantitative stage a semi-experimental design with two groups and three stages (pre-test, post-test and follow up) was used. In the quantitative stage, from 70 persons with borderline personality characteristics, 30 persons were selected based on criteria of entry and then randomly assigned in an experimental and a control group (each group with 15 person). The group of integrated oriented therapy received 15 sessions of treatment and the control group did not receive any treatment. Emotional instability scale was used to measure the dependent variable in the pretest, post-test and follow up. Data in qualitative stage were analyzed by thematic analysis and in quantitative stage were analyzed by Chi square test, repeated measure analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni test trough SPSS 24 software. Findings: The findings of the qualitative stage for designing integrative therapy package indicated five categories of injuries including emotional and behavioral vulnerability, perceptual and cognitive vulnerability, identity vulnerability, social vulnerability and physical vulnerability for individuals with borderline personality characteristics. In the quantitative stage, the results showed that there isn’t a significant difference between the integrated oriented therapy and control groups in emotional instability in post-test (P=0.205). But in the follow-up phase, it significantly reduced emotional instability (P<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the findings and according to the spectrum of five integrated injuries of individuals with borderline personality characteristics, integrated oriented therapy can be considered as a therapeutic approach for emotional instability of borderline individuals. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of humor in the relationship between the traits of borderline personality disorder and suicidal tendencies in public hospital employees of Lorestan province. This study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive in terms of data collection, which was conducted using structural equation model method. The statistical population of this study is made up of all the employees of the public hospitals of Lorestan province, using cluster random sampling, the number of 148 people was determined as a sample and according to Beck's suicide tendency questionnaire (1979). The borderline personality disorder subscale was answered based on the MCMI questionnaire and the humor questionnaire of Martin et al. (1981). The analysis of the hypotheses of this study was done by the method of structural equation modeling with SmartPLS software. Results showed that borderline personality disorder traits have a significant direct relationship with humor and suicidal tendencies. Also, the results of the final adjusted model showed that personality disorder traits with suicidal tendencies have an indirect effect with the mediating role of humor. The results of this study, by obtaining a suitable fit of the data with the model, showed that three conceptual frameworks, borderline personality disorder traits, suicidal tendencies and humor have theoretical intersection points in the hospital staff community. Are of Lorestan province and can be used in the form of a model and be taken into consideration in future planning. Manuscript profile

The relationship between borderline personality disorder and bipolar spectrum disorders, particularly bipolar has been subjects of interest to many researchers in recent years. The aim of this study was to better understand the dynamics and structural character of mental conditions and to compare the components of borderline personality disorder among people with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder type II. For this purpose, in a comparative study, 20 patients with borderline personality disorder and 19 patients with bipolar disorder, type II, who were selected in available samples and got admitted to the psychiatric ward. They were tested in terms of identity disorder, primitive defense mechanisms, reality testing, harmed and fear of intimacy. Results comparing the mean scores of the two groups indicated that no significant difference exists between mean scores of the two groups in borderline personality disorder. The results obtained from the hypothesis supports that borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder type II may have similar type of personality structure and psycho-dynamic characteristics. The results of research does not support Borderline personality disorder attachment and bipolar spectrum disorders on a continuum, implicitly. Manuscript profile

Borderline and antisocial personality disorder is a common and chronic disease that disrupts all aspects of life. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the affective and emotional temperament among patients with borderline and antisocial personality disorder and normal individuals. The study method is descriptive and causal-comparative. The statistical population consisted of all patients with antisocial and borderline personality disorder in Ardabil central prison and Isar and Fatemi psychiatric hospital in 2018. The sample included 50 patients diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder and 50 patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, as well as 50 normal individuals. All subjects were selected based on availability. The data were collected by structured clinical interview for personality disorders and Lara et al.’s affective and emotional composite temperament questionnaire. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and LSD test. The results showed that there were significant differences among the three groups of antisocial and borderline personality disorders and normal individuals in different dimensions of affective and emotional temperament (p<0.01). It seems that individuals with antisocial and borderline personality disorder are different emotionally and affectively. It is suggested that using the results of the present study and with the differential diagnosis of borderline and antisocial personality disorder can be provided an appropriate and comprehensive treatment plan by psychologists and psychiatrists to improve these individuals. The main characteristics of borderline personality disorder are extremely instable and widespread emotions, distorted self-image and interpersonal relationships, as well as remarkable irritability. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and defense mechanisms with the symptoms of borderline personality disorder among non-clinical population. In order to conduct this study, 396 students were selected through convenience sampling method and evaluated in terms of cognitive emotional regulation strategies, borderline disorder symptoms, and use of defense mechanisms. Stepwise regression analysis of obtained data revealed that subjects struggling with borderline personality disorder do not use mature defense mechanisms. Additionally, cognitive emotional regulation score is able to predict the extent of impulsivity in borderline personality disorder. Also, catastrophizing from the unadaptable strategies; defense mechanism of reaction formation with component of stress related dissociative and paranoid symptoms from the neurotic defensive mechanisms; defensive mechanism of transition to action, fantasy, and passive aggression from the immature defense mechanisms are related to borderline disorder. The results of the findings show that lack of cognitive emotional dysregulation and maladaptive defensive mechanisms appear to be the core of borderline personality disorder. Manuscript profile
