Effect of Nannochloropsis oculate dietary supplementation on growth performance, some hematological indices, and serum biochemistry of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Abstract :

Introduction:One of the main ways to increase the quality of aquafeed is to add various types of microalgae as a food supplement to the ration.

Aim: In this study, the effects of Nannochloropsis oculata microalgae supplementation was investigated on growth performance, some hematological indices, and serum biochemistry of zebra fish.

Material and methods: For experimental, 315 zebrafish (initial weight 0.25g) were randomly divided into 3 treatments with three replications (35 fish in each aquarium), and they were fed with the produced diets containing 0 (control), 5% (T1), and 10% (T2) of  N. oculate for 8 weeks.

Results:At the end of the experiment period, according to the results of the study of growth and survival indices the highest amount of final weight and weight gain was observed in treatment 2, which had a significant difference compared to treatment 1 and the control group (p<0.05).Also, the highest specific growth rate and the lowest food conversion ratio were observed in treatment 2. The analysis result obtained for the blood parameters, including the red blood cell counts, white blood cell counts and leukocyte differential counts had no significant difference between the treatments (p>0.05). In the examination of serum biochemical parameters, the highest and lowest total protein levels were recorded for treatment 2 (421.67 ± 5.51 g/dL) and control (406.67 ± 5.69 g/dL), respectively.

Conclusion: Dietary supplementation of the fish diet with 10% of N. oculate probably  improved the growth performance and serum biochemical parameters in zebra fish.
