The impact of apartment living on social and cultural identities and the quality of intergenerational relationships

Abstract :
Purpose:
This study aimed to examine the impact of apartment living on social and cultural identities as well as the quality of intergenerational relationships. Theoretically, the research is grounded in Henri Lefebvre’s perspective on the production of space, Manuel Castells’ theory of urban identity, and Putnam’s concept of social capital. These frameworks suggest that urban spaces—particularly in the form of apartment living—are not merely physical settings but social structures that can shape or weaken interactions and collective identity.
Methodology:
The study was conducted cross-sectionally and employed a quantitative approach. The statistical population consisted of citizens residing in residential apartment complexes in the metropolitan area of Kermanshah. A multi-stage cluster sampling method (multi-stage random sampling) was used, and a total of 384 individuals were selected as the sample. Data collection instruments included standardized and researcher-developed questionnaires addressing various aspects of apartment life, social and cultural identity, and the quality of intergenerational relationships.
Findings:
Results showed that apartment living significantly and negatively affects social identity (β = –39%), while it had no significant impact on cultural identity (β = –09%). Apartment living also had a significant effect on the quality of intergenerational relationships and was able to explain a considerable portion of its variance negatively (β = –36%).
Conclusion:
Overall, apartment living has meaningful and negative effects on the components of social identity and the quality of intergenerational relationships. In general, living in apartments—by limiting opportunities for social and family interactions—may lead to a decline in social identity and the quality of intergenerational relationships
