A Sociological Analysis of the Challenges to the Development of Rural Cooperatives

Abstract :

This study uses the qualitative Grounded Theory Method to provide a sociological analysis of the challenges hindering the development of rural cooperatives in Shahrekord County. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with managers of rural cooperatives and analyzed using a three-step coding process (open, axial, and selective). Finally, the central paradigm of "institutional dependence and social factors in rural cooperatives" was extracted. The findings revealed that the core challenges revolve around economic problems, government interventions, and social factors. These are shaped by causal conditions such as weak management, ineffective government policies, lack of education, administrative bureaucracy, and economic and social constraints. Contextual conditions—such as infrastructural deficiencies, national cultural characteristics, rapid cultural changes—and intervening conditions—like the rise of private companies, weak legislation, ineffective media, and fast-paced ICT development—further intensify these challenges. Proposed strategies include financial facilitation, enhanced information systems, training, promoting participation, improved management, and infrastructural support. The study also identifies significant social and economic consequences of underdeveloped cooperatives, such as increased migration, unemployment, despair, corruption, inequality, and technological lag. This research contributes a conceptual model for understanding structural obstacles to rural cooperative development.
