Abstract :
Introduction: Elite sports are accompanied by high psychological pressure and can lead to internal conflicts and fear of success among athletes; a phenomenon referred to as the "Peak Paradox." Methods: This research is a theoretical-analytical study with a qualitative approach, conducted based on a systematic review of selected sources. No empirical data were collected; the focus was on conceptual extraction and synthesis from six key, highly cited sources directly related to the topic. The analysis of sources was carried out using a conceptual-thematic method to categorize concepts and examine the relationships among them, aiming to achieve a deep understanding of the psychological dynamics associated with internal conflict and fear of success in elite athletes. Results: The analysis results indicate that internal conflict and fear of success in elite athletes may arise from anticipating negative consequences of success, such as increasing pressure, identity disruption, and social isolation. This experience is exacerbated by cognitive biases (e.g., external attributions of success and cognitions related to impostor syndrome), emotional regulation difficulties, and environmental factors. The outcomes include performance fluctuations, choking under pressure, avoidance behaviors, and psychosomatic symptoms, which can ultimately lead to psychological burnout and a “tragic fall” in the athlete’s career. Conclusion: The Peak Paradox reflects the complex interplay between individual vulnerabilities and external pressures in elite sports. Effective management of this phenomenon requires a multi-level, evidence-based, and holistic approach, in which coaches, psychologists, and sports organizations play key roles. Psychological support, fostering a healthy identity, and structural interventions can contribute to the well-being and career longevity of athletes.
