Explaining the issue of the necessity of the Imam's divine knowledge among Imamiyya, Mu'tazilite, and Ash'ari thinkers

Abstract :
The main issue of the research is the disagreement about the nature, quality and sources of the Imam's knowledge. From the Imamiyyah's perspective, the Imam, as the infallible successor of the Prophet (PBUH), must have infallible divine knowledge connected to the source of revelation in order to be able to meet all the religious and leadership needs of the society. In contrast, the Mu'tazilites and Ash'arites consider ijtihad knowledge conditional on error sufficient and do not consider direct connection to divine knowledge necessary. The aim of this research is to explain the theoretical foundations of each school and analyze their evidence about the Imam's knowledge, which is organized based on the descriptive-analytical method. The findings show that the Imamiyyah, citing the divine appointment of the Imamate and the narrations of the Infallibles (PBUH), considers the Imam's knowledge to be beyond human knowledge and based on inspiration and connection to the unseen. In contrast, the Mu'tazilites and Ash'arites, emphasizing ijtihad and the possibility of error, define the Imam's knowledge as that of a comprehensive mujtahid. Also, unlike the Mu’tazilites, the Ash’arites accept the possibility of non-prophets benefiting from divine knowledge, but they do not consider it exclusive to the Imam. The conclusion indicates that the differences between these schools are rooted in theological foundations such as infallibility, divine text, and the role of reason in cognition. This research paves the way for more in-depth comparative studies on the issue of Imamate.
