Abstract :
This study aimed to examine the mediating role of perceived competence in the relationship between identity styles and responsibility among students at the University of Tabriz. The statistical population included all students enrolled at this university during the 2023-2024 academic year, with a sample of 378 students selected through cluster random sampling. Data collection involved standardized questionnaires, including Berzonsky’s Identity Style, Harter's Perceived Competence, and Gough’s Responsibility. The structural equation modeling analysis revealed significant results; specifically, both informational and normative identity styles positively influenced responsibility, while the avoidant identity style had a negative effect on this variable. Furthermore, the informational and normative identity styles positively affected perceived competence, whereas the avoidant style significantly reduced it. The examination of mediating effects showed that informational and normative identity styles indirectly increased responsibility by enhancing perceived competence, while the avoidant style diminished responsibility through the same mechanism.These findings highlight the crucial role of perceived competence in fostering responsibility through various identity styles and suggest valuable implications for developing educational and therapeutic programs at the University of Tabriz. The results indicate that enhancing perceived competence among students can lead to increased responsibility and the cultivation of positive personality traits. This enhancement is not only influential in the personal growth of students but also contributes to improving their social interactions and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, creating supportive environments and implementing educational programs focused on strengthening perceived competence are of significant importance. Such initiatives can help students navigate challenges more effectively and promote a more engaged and responsible student body, ultimately benefiting their academic and social experiences during their university years.
