The Role of Satisfaction of Basic Psychological Needs in Social Adjustment and Friendship Quality of Gifted Students

Abstract :
This study aims to investigate the role of satisfaction of basic psychological needs in social adjustment and friendship quality of gifted students. The method of the present study is one of the descriptivel and correlational studies. The statistical population consisted of all male high school gifted students in Khoy city during the academic year 2023-2024, totaling 393 individuals. The sample of 195 students was selected using a simple random sampling method, with sample size determined by Cochran's formula. The data collection tools were the basic Psychological needs scale (Li Gardia et al., 2000), the friendship quality questionnaire (Hijazi & Zohrevand, 2006), and the California Personal-social adjustment questionnaire (Clark et al., 1953). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression in software SPSS-23. The results of Pearson correlation showed that total scores of social adjustment (r = 0.676, p < 0.01) and friendship quality (r = 0.554, p < 0.01) had a significant positive relationship with satisfaction of basic psychological needs. Furthermore, the results of stepwise regression analysis revealed that the satisfaction of basic psychological needs could predict 35% of the variance in social adjustment, and 36% of the variance in friendship quality among gifted students. Overall, the results of this study suggest that meeting students' basic psychological needs is an effective strategy for improving social adjustment and friendship quality among students. urthermore, the results of stepwise regression analysis revealed that the satisfaction of basic psychological needs could predict 35% of the variance in social adjustment, and 36% of the variance in friendship quality among gifted students. Overall, the results of this study suggest that meeting students' basic psychological needs is an effective strategy for improving social adjustment and friendship quality among students
