The Prediction of Mobile Phone Addiction based on Academic Stress and Sensation Seeking with the Mediation of Self-Esteem in College Students

Abstract :

Aim: The present research was conducted with the aim of predicting mobile phone addiction based on academic stress and sensation seeking with the mediation of self-esteem. Method: The present research method was descriptive with correlation design. The statistical population of the research consisted of all undergraduate students of Azad University of Kashan in the first semester of the academic year 1402-1403. 350 people from this community were selected by cluster sampling method. The measurement tools included the riding cell phone addiction questionnaire (2013), Godzella's academic stress questionnaire (1991). Rosenberg's self-esteem questionnaire (1965) and Zuckerman's sensation seeking questionnaire (1978). Results: Data analysis was done using Pearson's correlation coefficient and path analysis. The results of the research showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between self-esteem and cell phone addiction (p< 0.01), on the other hand, there is a positive and significant relationship between academic stress and cell phone addiction and excitement seeking and cell phone addiction. (p< 0.01), Also, there is a negative and significant relationship between academic stress and self-esteem and excitement seeking and self-esteem (p< 0.01). Conclusion: Based on the findings of the research, it can be concluded that academic stress and thrill seeking affect mobile phone addiction through self-esteem. In addition, the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between academic stress and sensation seeking with mobile phone addiction was confirmed. Therefore, it is suggested to conduct educational workshops to reduce academic stress, regulate emotions and increase self-esteem, to reduce students' addiction to mobile phones.
