Abstract :
Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most well-known artists of the Renaissance era. He is considered to be a comprehensive personality and, apart from art, he was proficient in various fields of natural and theoretical sciences. He has painted in different techniques, all of which are supported by his knowledge. One of the most well-known artistic techniques of da Vinci is the style of portraiture, which is divided into two branches: other portraiture and self-portraiture. The present article tries to provide a reading of these examples by selecting 5 case examples of da Vinci's portraits and asking questions based on the implementation of John Berger's theories on these examples. John Berger is one of the contemporary thinkers in the field of art, who at the beginning of the post-modern era worked on calligraphy. He follows the line of thought of Marxist criticism and rejects classical art criticism due to the disconnection of the work of art with concepts such as class, race and gender. This research will use the descriptive-analytical method with a critical approach to achieve the research goals and answer the research questions. Based on the results obtained from this thesis, if Da Vinci's portraits are looked at through the new lens of Berger's criticism, various layers of it could not be seen with classical criticism.
