Abstract :
Imagination, and the cultural worldview of the time. Among these artists, Soltan Mohammad, a key figure of the Second Tabriz School, advanced the visual depiction of demons beyond simply repeating earlier pictorial traditions, offering a creative reinterpretation of these mythical beings. This article aims to examine the visual and conceptual structures behind the representation of divs in Soltan Mohammad’s paintings, exploring how their visual features intersect with mythological, aesthetic, and sometimes mystical aspects. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, and drawing from library sources and selected illustrations from the Shahnameh of Tahmasp, the study shows that Soltan Mohammad’s demons have hybrid forms, exaggerated anatomies, symbolic use of color, and lively, human-like gestures. These elements—along with humor, violence, and fantasy—convey layered meanings that reflect the artist’s complex engagement with ideas of evil, metaphysical dualities, and imaginative visual storytelling. This style of depiction is not just decorative or narrative but represents a thoughtful and innovative way of blending tradition and creativity within Safavid painting
