Abstract :

Phenomenology, as a philosophical and qualitative approach, emphasizes lived experience and embodied perception in understanding the built environment. In architecture, it foregrounds multi-sensory engagement, memory, atmosphere, and the sense of dwelling. This study compares three contemporary architects—Peter Zumthor, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl—and their phenomenological interpretations of “place.” Zumthor emphasizes silence and materiality; Pallasmaa advocates for multi-sensory perception; and Holl explores parallax and temporality.

The research employs a qualitative-interpretative methodology rooted in phenomenological inquiry. A literature review of Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Bachelard established a framework viewing place as embodied and memory-laden. The study then analyzed the architects’ theoretical writings, lectures, and selected projects through content analysis, identifying themes such as silence, tactile perception, atmosphere, and temporality. A comparative matrix mapped their conceptual priorities, use of materials, sensory elements, and interpretations of user experience.

Findings indicate that all three architects regard architecture as an existential event rather than merely a functional or aesthetic object. Zumthor’s work evokes a “quiet beauty” through materiality and subtle lighting, Pallasmaa critiques the dominance of vision by emphasizing touch, hearing, and smell, and Holl promotes an architecture that unfolds through movement and shifting perspectives via light and color. Together, their approaches demonstrate that integrating phenomenological themes can enrich architectural theory and create profound, human-centered experiences.
