Characterization of the Protagonist in the Novels of Ahmad Mahmoud and Esmail Fasih

Abstract :

Characterization is the most fascinating element of fiction and tells of the depth of the author's view of humans. Ahmad Mahmoud and Esmail Fasih are two famous Iranian writers who have created remarkable works. In this study, the character of Jalal Aryan in the story of Soraya in a Coma, winter 1983 and the blind heart by Esmail Fasih, and the character of Khalid in the stories of the Burned Earth, neighbors, the Story of a City and the Tree of Fig Temples by Ahmad Mahmoud are examined and analyzed. The general view of both authors is optimistic. Fasih does not consider the world desirable, But he does not consider it full of evil and ugliness either. The characters in all three novels are diverse but not numerous. In characterization, he has turned to an indirect way. The trend of the theater of the times has made it to use the way of talking and describing the appearance more in the introduction of the characters. The internal monologue has no place in these novels. The hero of the eloquent stories, Jalal Arian, is a semi-dynamic character in these novels. He is an observer narrator; Although the author wants to tell the story of more patriotic heroes, he is a very strict observer who reports the life of Iranian immigrants in a biased way. Ahmad Mahmoud also has an optimistic view of life and people. Also, the protagonists of Ahmad Mahmoud's story, like Khalid, believe in a goal and a thought that they fight for its realization. In his works, he takes a close look at criminals and pays attention to crimes and social issues in a radical and detailed way.
