Analyzing the effective components of biophilic architecture in medical centers from the perspective of patients' health quality (Study case: selected hospitals in the world)

Abstract :

Nowadays, due to the increase of diseases, patients spend a long time in medical centers; Therefore, these centers are important as a container for the treatment and recovery of the patient. In the modern world, where most of the treatment spaces rely on technology and the advancement of medical methods, less attention is paid to nature and its role as an effective factor in treatment and human health and as a result, the environment of treatment centers has turned into dry and soulless spaces. Man's need to establish a relationship with nature is natural and undeniable. In terms of environmental psychology, nature causes human physical, mental and psychological peace. In the meantime, the biophilic design approach can be effective in the environment of such centers due to establishing a close relationship between man and nature. The goal of biophilic design is to reintegrate with nature in the process of treating humans as a part of nature. Because nature has healing power on physiological and mental health. This approach also shows that nature is important for future generations. Therefore, for the sake of human health, buildings should be considered as a set equal to the natural environment in order to create opportunities to experience nature inside the building and use natural patterns and geometries. The positive effects of nature on human health became apparent when the negative effects of the industrial revolution on cities increased. The natural light, color and environment of the hospital have a positive effect not only on the mind of the patients, but also on their physical illness. The results of the studies show that there is a very close relationship between the environment and increasing the effectiveness of the treatment. From this point of view, applying biophilic design indicators in hospital buildings and connecting with nature is very important in terms of human and nature integration. Analyzing the effective components of biophilic architecture on the health quality of patients in selected medical centers in the world is the goal that the current research seeks to achieve. Based on this, the question that arises: How can biophilic architectural components be used to improve the quality of therapeutic spaces in improving the health of patients? The research method in this article is based on qualitative and descriptive-analytical method. Also, library study of articles, specialized publications, and books form the basis of expressing, analyzing, and describing the available materials. In this study, the components of biophilic design and architecture classified by Kellert and Calabrese were investigated in 5 hospitals: Khoo Tek Puat Singapore, Butaro Rwanda, Ostra Sweden, Bahçelievler Memorial Istanbul and Ng Teng Fong Jurong Singapore. The application of biophilic parameters in these hospitals and how they are used in each location are presented in the analysis tables and supported by images and the obtained data are evaluated. The reason for choosing these medical centers was the impact of these spaces on the health and satisfaction of patients and employees compared to other hospitals based on official reports. The realization of the biophilic hospital design model has been made possible by analyzing and examining case examples in the field of the feasibility of implementing biophilic design models, prioritizing strategies and biophilic design models, and analyzing the compatibility of biophilic design models with each of the functional departments of medical centers to the limitations and needs of each department. Also, by successfully applying biophilic design principles, healthier environments are created for people. People who are alienated from the natural environment must move to the ecocentric era to get rid of the environmental crises caused by the human-centered era. Biophilic design is one of the important approaches that accelerate this transition. Important results of studies show that nature is beneficial for people. Accordingly, it can be claimed that the concept of biophilic design represents an approach aimed at incorporate nature into the spaces where people spend their time. As a result, applying biophilic design principles to integrate structures with nature and create healing environments in hospitals will be critical. The results of this research can be used by designers to accelerate the healing process of patients by increasing mental peace and hope and reducing anxiety and depression resulting from the disease.
