A survey of frequency and risk factors of "insect bite hypersensitivity" in horses of Lorestan province

Abstract :
The current study investigated the frequency of insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) and the role of some host and environmental factors in its occurrence in different cities of Lorestan province. To do this, every time we visited the horse breeding centers, almost all the horses in those centers were examined for the presence or absence of skin lesions, and the results together with the information about the individual horses and the environmental and management data were recorded. The collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. The results of this study showed that out of 383 examined horses, 74 (19.3%) were afflicted with the IBH disease. Also, statistical analysis revealed that among host factors (including age, gender, breed, and color), the relationship between breed and the frequency of the disease was statistically significant (p≤0.001). Among the environmental and management factors, the location of sampling (city) (p≤0.001) and the herd size (p≤0.01) indicated a significant correlation with the frequency of the disease. The relationship between intervals of feces clean-up, and whether or not to fight against insects with IBH was not significant (p>0/05). The results of this study showed that, although the incidence of IBH in the horses of Lorestan province is lower than in other studies conducted in Iran (Khuzestan and Tehran), the lesions caused by this disease still affect a significant number of horses in this province.
