Abstract :

Family is the first and the most important communicative system for children; therefore, using appropriate parenting methods could have considerable effects on the psychological and social development of children. This study investigated the effectiveness of problem solving training on parent's interactive style with their children. This research used pseudo- experimental method, single group with pre & post tests design, on 28 subjects selected via available sampling procedure from mothers of elementary students in the city of Tehran. Mothers participated in the problem solving training workshops held for 9 sessions once a week, 2-hours each. Parents completed two instruments of Parenting Style and Parent-Child Relationship Inventory before and after the workshop. Results of the repeated measure analysis of variance indicated that participation in the problem solving workshop increased the mean of problem solving subscale and reduced the punishment subscale of the Parenting Style Questionnaire. Data obtained from the Parent- Child Relationship Inventory showed a significant increase in the mean of Limit Setting subscale. Problem solving skills training for parents can increase the use of problem solving strategies as a parenting style and may control children in the family through the rule setting
