The Relationship between Attachment Style and Attitude toward Marriage among Undergraduate Students of Tehran University

Abstract :
The purpose of the study was to survey the relationship between attachment styles and marital attitude among undergraduate students of Tehran University. Based on statistical methods, 388 persons were selected as the research sample. After discarding failed questionnaires, 377 answer sheets were analyzed. To collect the required data, the following major means and sources have been used: Collins and Read’s questionnaire of adult attachment which includes eighteen items of Likert scaling type. It also covers three themes: Dependency, Closeness and Anxiety; Pre-marriage inventory which includes forty-five (Yes/No) items. To analyze the obtained data, descriptive statistics (abundance ratio, percentage, average and chart) were applied, and to test research questions, inferential statistics (Correlation regression) were used. The results indicated that: 1) there is a significant relationship between secure attachment style and marital attitude. Marital attitude can be predicted by attachment style score; 2) there is no significant relationship between avoidance attachment style and marital attitude; 3) there is no significant relationship between anxiety attachment style and marital attitude; 4) there is a significant relationship between secure attachment style and conflict resolution attitude; 5) there is a significant relationship between avoidance attachment style and conflict resolution attitude, and; 6) there is no significant relationship between anxiety attachment style and conflict resolution attitude.
