Peace and Diplomacy in Islam: A Jurisprudential and Historical Examination of International Relations and Conflict Resolution

Abstract :
Peace and diplomacy in Islam are of great importance, and this topic has been addressed both legally and historically. Peace is a fundamental principle for preserving and expanding the religion and Islamic community in Islamic jurisprudence. Diplomacy and peaceful methods were also employed by the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) to resolve disputes and establish peace in his lifetime. Diplomacy and negotiation were the tools used by the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) to transform many wars and conflicts into peace and peaceful coexistence in history. One prominent example of this approach is the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which was signed with the Quraysh and brought ten years of peace and tranquility to Muslims. Additionally, a history of coexistence between Muslims, Jews & Christians shows, lots of featuring numerous examples of treaties and peaceful agreements, that confirm the importance of peace and diplomacy in Islam. Islam believes that peace or war is necessary depending on the circumstances, and ultimately, it advocates fighting against oppression to achieve a just peace in the world. It is evident from the strategies of the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) in diplomacy and international relations that the invitation to Islam has always been the priority over war. The importance of peace and diplomacy in Islam is highlighted by many examples of treaties and peaceful agreements, including the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the Constitution of Medina. In the end, Islam prescribes fighting against oppression to achieve just peace in the world.
