The Effect of Positive Thinking Skills Training on Creative Thinking, Outcome Expectations, and Irritability in Teachers

Abstract :

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of positive thinking skills training on creative thinking, outcome expectations, and irritability in teachers.

Method: The present study was a semi-experimental pretest-posttest with a control group. The statistical population consisted of elementary school teachers in Noorabad city. After selecting six schools, 40 teachers were selected using purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups of 20. The instruments used included the Creative Thinking (Welch & McDowall, 2010), Outcome Expectations (Riggs & Knight, 1994), and Irritability (Craig, Hietanen, Markova & Berrios, 2006) questionnaires, and the Positive Thinking Skills Training Protocol (Seligman, 2014). The experimental group underwent positive thinking skills training for eight sessions. Then a post-test was administered.

Findings: The results of multivariate covariance analysis showed that the difference in mean scores of creative thinking, outcome expectations, and irritability after positive thinking skills training was significant compared to the control group (P<0.01); so that positive thinking skills training increased creative thinking and outcome expectations, and decreased irritability in teachers.

Conclusion: Given the close relationship between teachers and students, it is better to pay special attention to teachers and officials, counselors, clinics and psychology centers should use positive thinking skills training to increase creative thinking and outcome expectations, and reduce irritability in teachers.
