Abstract :
Objectives : This study was carried out to determine mental health of the university students in Islamic Azad University, Abadan branch who were admitted in the academic year 2006-2007 . Method : In this cross-sectional and descriptive study , 554 students (366 femal,188 male) were randomly selected and evaluated on the basis of the General Health Questionnair-28 (GHQ-28) . The reliability of the Questionnaire was computed , and the validity was also determined in a separate study including 80 students . Data was analyzed using T-test, ANOVA, and Scheffe test . Results : The study showed that 55.5% of females, and 34.4% of males ,and overall 47.7% of all of the subjects had probably mental health problems . The results also indicated a significant difference in mental health status between men and women , single and married , interested and uninterested in their fields of study , and different age groups. However, it was found that there was no significant difference between indigenous and non-indigenous students . Also, the data yielded appropriate validity and reliability for GHQ-28 . Conclusion : The high mental health problems in the young population of university students is very important because of their future role in the society . Therefore, we need to come up with plans in order to improve students mental health status .
