Assessing the Impact of Environmental, Social, and Economic Considerations on the Construction of Sustainable Hotels in Iran

Abstract :

This study explores the integration of environmental, social, and economic factors in sustainable hotel development in Iran. Using a mixed-methods approach, it identifies key dimensions through quantitative analysis (EFA of 15 variables) and qualitative interviews with experts. Three main factors emerged: Environmental Governance, Resource & Technology Management, and Policy Integration, with perspectives varying by gender, education, and expertise. Major challenges include water scarcity, economic sanctions, cultural issues, and limited community involvement. The research emphasizes the need for integrated strategies combining technological innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and supportive policies. Tailored approaches based on stakeholder backgrounds are recommended. Proposed solutions include legislative frameworks, innovative financing (e.g., BOT, Green Sukuk), and local advisory committees. The study concludes that sustainability in Iran’s tourism sector depends on harmonizing environmental, social, and economic priorities. Comparison with previous studies shows alignment with global challenges and innovation in providing a localized framework for Iran. Practical proposals include the formulation of support rules, the use of green technologies and the strengthening of local participation. This framework not only contributes to the sustainable development of Iran's tourism industry, but can also be used as a model for other developing countries with similar challenges.
