Spatial Analysis of Social Damages of Urban Contexts (A Case of New And Informal Contexts of Maragheh)

Abstract :

Social damage is one of the central themes in urban pathology studies, reflecting the challenges of both informal settlements and newly developed urban areas. The present research aimed to conduct a spatial analysis of social damage in urban contexts, focusing on the new and informal settlements of Maragheh city. The study employed a descriptive, causal-comparative design. The statistical population consisted of residents of Golshahr (a new urban settlement) and Mikael Abad with its surrounding informal areas. Based on the research method and expert recommendations, a sample of 200 participants (100 from each context) was selected through probability cluster sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-designed questionnaire on social harms, and analyzed through chi-square tests and multivariate analysis of variance. The results of the first hypothesis revealed significant differences in the types of social damage between the new and informal contexts of Maragheh; however, no significant difference was found across the five components (social relations, violence, family, public environment, and property). The second hypothesis test indicated that the overall level of social damage differs significantly between the two contexts, with notable variation across all five components. The findings conclude that while social harms exist in both contexts, their prevalence is considerably higher in informal settlements than in new urban areas.
