The Functions of the Verbal Prefix vā- in Khajei Dialect

Abstract :

 

This research investigates the functions of the verbal prefix vā within the Khajei dialect. This particular dialect is spoken in the Khajei village situated in the Meimand district of Firozabad city in Fars province. To achieve this purpose, a total of 27 complex verbs formed with this prefix are introduced and analyzed in order to investigate their functions and structural-semantic characteristics. The research methodology is as follows: first, the corresponding forms in both modern and middle Persian (if any) are presented, followed by the identification of the verb’s root in the old Iranian language. The subsequent discussion elucidates the significance and roles of the verb, accompanied by an illustrative example from the Khajei dialect spoken in Bavarian village.   One of the conclusions drawn from the forthcoming research is that three of the examined verbs do not function as prefix verbs. Additionally, it has been observed that in certain instances, the prefix has altered the meaning of an individual verb across various contexts. Another observation reveals that the prefix vā- predominantly emphasizes one of the meanings associated with the base verb, while in a single instance, it introduces a novel meaning to the base verb. Furthermore, in two of the verbs, this prefix, which conveys the notion of "again," suggests a repetition of the action
