Abstract :

Critical discourse analysis is one of the new approaches to text analysis that focuses on the confrontation and relationship between society and power. Critical discourse analysis is often an integral part of the social context,in addition to revealing power relations and underlying ideologies of social contexts .Van Leeuwen's approach is considered one of the trends of critical discourse analysis, which relies on the representation of social actors based on socio-semantic components. The purpose of this research is to examine some of Khalil Hassan Khalil’s novels based on Van Leeuwen’s model to determine how this novelist portrays social activists during the period of tension that Egypt has gone through. The research results show that the representation of social activists in Khalil Hassan Khalil's novels is purposeful and influenced by her social and intellectual views.The discourse producer has used various socio-semantic components of Van Leeuwen’s model to portray social actors in his discourse, but expression-based components such as naming, epithets, linking, separation and referential type are more common and used in his discourse. Which shows his frankness in representing social actores. In this regard, those in power are represented negatively as those who oppress the lower classes of society, and the marginalized poor are represented positively as those who did not remain silent in the face of injustice and fought against it. Also, this discourse includes elements such as passivization, classification, implicit meaning, abstraction, objectification, and other components.
