Abstract :

This research analyzes and examines the process of interconnection between the development of railway transportation and social transformations in shaping the spatial identity of railway stations in Iran and Turkey during the period from 1921 to 1978 (the Pahlavi regime in Iran and the Atatürk era in Turkey). The main goal of this study is to understand the reciprocal impacts of railway transportation development and social, cultural, economic, and political changes on the architectural and social design of stations and, consequently, the formation of the spatial identity of these spaces. The research, emphasizing three core dimensions—"architectural design of stations," "social interactions in station spaces," and "cultural and symbolic influences of stations on spatial identity"—investigates and compares this process in Iran and Turkey. The research method is mixed; in the qualitative section, data is collected through the analysis of historical documents and in-depth interviews with experts from various fields. In the quantitative section, information is gathered through an online questionnaire among railway station users in both countries, and analyzed using SPSS software and t-tests. The results show that social and political transformations during the Pahlavi and Atatürk eras directly impacted the spatial identity of the stations and social interactions within station spaces, playing a key role in the formation of urban identity and the social functions of these spaces. This study can serve as a foundation for the design and planning of railway stations in the future, considering social and historical dimensions.
