Human and Environment Interaction in the Khuzestan Plain during the Holocene

Abstract :
The Khuzestan Plain, as one of the key regions in Iranian archaeological research, provides significant insights into the formation of early human settlements during the Holocene and the changes in subsistence and settlement patterns from the Neolithic to historical periods. This study examines the impact of environmental and climatic factors on the settlement patterns of ancient communities in this region. The primary objective is to analyze the role of environmental capacities and transformations in shaping cultural and subsistence developments. Key research questions include the influence of climatic and geographical changes on human settlements and the relationship between ecological transformations and cultural trends. The methodology is based on analyzing factors affecting settlement location and changes in settlement patterns. The results indicate that during the early Holocene, human settlements were established in higher elevations, while in the middle Holocene, the expansion of marshes and lakes led to the relocation of settlements to lower areas. In the late Holocene, climatic changes and the decline in surface and groundwater levels prompted the development of hydraulic engineering systems and shifts in subsistence strategies. The findings suggest that the interaction between environmental changes and human innovations played a crucial role in cultural evolution and the long-term sustainability of settlements in the Khuzestan Plain. This study, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between ecological factors and the development of ancient civilizations.
Introduction
The Khuzestan Plain, located in southwestern Iran, presents one of the most significant archaeological landscapes for exploring the dynamics of human-environment interaction during the Holocene epoch. Due to its strategic geographical position near the Persian Gulf and unique environmental diversity, ranging from mountainous terrains to alluvial lowlands, it has served as a focal point for human settlement and cultural evolution over millennia. This study aims to examine the interplay between environmental transformations and socio-cultural developments in ancient communities inhabiting the region from the early Holocene to historical times. Drawing from theoretical paradigms in archaeology, particularly those integrating low-level empirical observations with high-level interpretative frameworks, the research seeks to uncover how climatic shifts, geomorphological processes, and hydrological patterns influenced the establishment, migration, and sustainability of human settlements.
By exploring geoarchaeological, hydrological, and paleoenvironmental evidence, the paper situates Khuzestan as a dynamic cultural and ecological zone. Past studies have shown that episodes of climate fluctuation—including periods of increased precipitation or aridification—correspond with significant transitions in subsistence strategies and spatial distribution of communities. For instance, during the early Holocene, settlements were predominantly established in upland zones, whereas the middle Holocene saw a transition to lower marshlands due to the expansion of water bodies. In later phases, declining groundwater and surface water levels prompted the emergence of hydraulic innovations, such as irrigation canals and reservoirs, enabling prolonged human occupation.
The study is particularly concerned with how ancient populations perceived and responded to environmental variability, utilizing adaptive strategies that included seasonal transhumance, mixed subsistence economies, and settlement relocation. It emphasizes the relevance of interdisciplinary approaches combining archaeology, environmental science, and remote sensing to reconstruct historical landscapes. Ultimately, understanding the feedback loop between ecological change and human agency in Khuzestan offers broader implications for interpreting the resilience and transformation of early civilizations across the ancient Near East.
Methodology
This research employed an interdisciplinary methodological framework combining archaeological analysis, geomorphological assessment, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Primary data sources included satellite imagery, archaeological survey reports, climatic and hydrological records, and sedimentological studies. The goal was to trace the spatial and chronological evolution of settlement patterns across the Holocene in the Khuzestan Plain.
By synthesizing evidence from environmental archaeology, hydrological modeling, and geographical information systems (GIS), the study reconstructed past ecological conditions and identified their impacts on human settlement dynamics. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of rivers, floodplains, and alluvial deposits in influencing settlement location. Radiocarbon dating and luminescence chronology were also used to determine the timing of habitation layers. Moreover, archaeological evidence of water management systems and changes in material culture was analyzed to correlate technological responses with environmental pressures. This integrative approach enabled a nuanced understanding of how ancient communities adapted to shifting environmental parameters across different periods of the Holocene.
Discussion
The Holocene epoch witnessed profound climatic and environmental changes that reshaped the landscape of the Khuzestan Plain and directly influenced the lifeways of its ancient inhabitants. During the early Holocene, rising temperatures and increased rainfall led to expanded vegetation cover and the formation of early agricultural systems. Communities tended to settle in elevated areas with access to seasonal rivers and fertile soils. These upland zones offered relative security from floods and allowed for diversified subsistence strategies, including early cultivation and limited animal domestication.
By the middle Holocene (ca. 8200–4200 BP), there was a marked shift in settlement patterns. Enhanced rainfall and changes in river courses resulted in the formation of extensive wetlands and shallow lakes, particularly in lower elevation areas. Consequently, human settlements gradually migrated toward these lowland regions to capitalize on newly formed aquatic ecosystems. These areas, rich in biodiversity and fertile sediments, supported fishing, seasonal foraging, and wetland agriculture. Sites such as Chogha Mish and Chogha Bonut illustrate the complexity of these adaptive strategies, displaying mixed economies and advanced water-use technologies.
Climatic data from paleoenvironmental studies show that around 4200 BP, a major aridification event occurred, corresponding with the so-called "4.2 kiloyear event." This climatic downturn, marked by declining rainfall and falling groundwater levels, compelled communities to innovate new subsistence and settlement strategies. The introduction of hydraulic engineering—irrigation canals, diversion dams, and underground qanats—became pivotal in sustaining agriculture and urban development. Archaeological remains from this period, including the Gargar Canal system and Shapur I’s dam, highlight the sophistication of water management during the Elamite and Sassanian periods.
Geomorphological changes also played a decisive role in shaping the human-environment interaction in the region. The ongoing deposition of alluvial sediments, influenced by tectonic uplift and erosion in the Zagros Mountains, periodically altered the landscape of the plain. As floodplains expanded or contracted, communities had to relocate or modify their land use practices. The archaeological stratigraphy of sites like Susiana shows alternating phases of occupation and abandonment closely tied to fluvial dynamics.
Seasonal transhumance emerged as a resilient response to environmental variability. Nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralists migrated between highland summer pastures in the Zagros and lowland winter settlements in Khuzestan, a practice that dates back to the Neolithic. This mobility ensured flexible access to ecological zones with different resource bases and mitigated risks associated with localized climatic stress. Evidence from isotopic analysis of faunal remains confirms the vertical movement of herds and supports the notion of integrated highland-lowland economic systems.
River systems such as the Karun, Dez, and Karkheh were instrumental in shaping settlement patterns. Their natural courses, avulsions, and sedimentation regimes created fertile floodplains, but also posed challenges through unpredictable floods and salinization. Human interventions, including the rerouting of river branches and construction of embankments, were common in response to these dynamics. The geoarchaeological study of oxbow lakes and abandoned channels offers insights into how societies negotiated the risks and benefits of riverine environments.
The Khuzestan Plain’s archaeological record reveals not only the vulnerabilities of ancient communities to environmental stress but also their capacity for resilience through technological innovation and social adaptation. Cultural responses to environmental pressures were not uniform; they varied according to community size, social organization, resource access, and historical context. For example, large urban centers like Susa developed centralized water infrastructure, while smaller rural communities adapted through seasonal mobility or crop diversification.
Moreover, the study underscores the importance of environmental determinism being tempered by human agency. While environmental changes set the parameters of possibility, it was human ingenuity—manifested in engineering, mobility, and political organization—that shaped the trajectory of cultural development. The interaction between ecological constraints and cultural responses in Khuzestan offers a compelling model for understanding long-term human resilience.
Conclusion
This study demonstrates that the formation and evolution of human settlements in the Khuzestan Plain during the Holocene were closely tied to environmental and climatic dynamics. Archaeological, geomorphological, and paleoenvironmental evidence reveals that communities consistently adapted their strategies in response to shifting river systems, sediment deposition, climate fluctuations, and hydrological transformations. From early upland settlements to lowland marsh adaptations, and from rain-fed agriculture to complex irrigation networks, the trajectory of habitation illustrates a profound entanglement between humans and their environment.
Notably, the development of hydraulic systems and the continuation of transhumant pastoralism were key strategies that enabled sustained occupation despite environmental challenges. The study affirms that while ecological factors influenced settlement location and subsistence options, human agency played a critical role in mediating these forces. Technological innovations, flexible economies, and adaptive mobility allowed ancient communities to persist and flourish under diverse conditions.
By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this research enriches our understanding of ancient human-environment interactions and offers a framework for interpreting cultural resilience. It also highlights the broader relevance of Khuzestan as a case study for investigating how early civilizations responded to and shaped their ecological contexts—insights that are increasingly pertinent in the face of modern environmental challenges.

دشت خوزستان به عنوان یکی از مناطق کلیدی در پژوهشهای باستانشناسی ایران، بینشهای مهمی درباره شکلگیری نخستین سکونتگاههای انسانی در عصر هولوسن و تغییرات نظام زیستی و استقراری جوامع از دوره نوسنگی تا دوران تاریخی ارائه میدهد. این پژوهش به بررسی تأثیر عوامل محیطی و اقلیمی بر الگوهای استقراری جوامع باستانی در این منطقه میپردازد. هدف اصلی، تحلیل نقش ظرفیتها و دگرگونیهای زیستمحیطی در شکلگیری و تحولات فرهنگی ـ معیشتی جوامع است. پرسشهای اصلی شامل تأثیر تغییرات اقلیمی و جغرافیایی بر استقرارهای انسانی و ارتباط بین دگرگونیهای زیستبومشناختی و روندهای فرهنگی است. روششناسی تحقیق مبتنی بر تحلیل عوامل مؤثر بر مکانگزینی سکونتگاهها و تغییر الگوهای استقراری است. نتایج نشان میدهد که در هولوسن قدیم، استقرارهای انسانی در مناطق مرتفعتر شکل گرفتند، در حالی که در هولوسن میانه، گسترش مردابها و دریاچهها منجر به جابجایی استقرارها به مناطق پستتر شد. در هولوسن جدید، تغییرات اقلیمی و افت تراز آبهای سطحی و زیرزمینی، توسعه سامانههای مهندسی آبی و تغییر شیوههای معیشتی را به دنبال داشت. یافتهها حاکی از آن است که تعامل بین تغییرات محیطی و نوآوریهای انسانی، نقش کلیدی در تکامل فرهنگی و پایداری استقرارهای بلندمدت در دشت خوزستان داشته است. این مطالعه با تأکید بر اهمیت رویکردهای میانرشتهای، درک عمیقتری از رابطه بین عوامل زیستبومشناختی و توسعه تمدنهای باستانی ارائه میدهد. |

The Khuzestan Plain, as one of the key regions in Iranian archaeological research, provides significant insights into the formation of early human settlements during the Holocene and the changes in subsistence and settlement patterns from the Neolithic to historical periods. This study examines the impact of environmental and climatic factors on the settlement patterns of ancient communities in this region. The primary objective is to analyze the role of environmental capacities and transformations in shaping cultural and subsistence developments. Key research questions include the influence of climatic and geographical changes on human settlements and the relationship between ecological transformations and cultural trends. The methodology is based on analyzing factors affecting settlement location and changes in settlement patterns. The results indicate that during the early Holocene, human settlements were established in higher elevations, while in the middle Holocene, the expansion of marshes and lakes led to the relocation of settlements to lower areas. In the late Holocene, climatic changes and the decline in surface and groundwater levels prompted the development of hydraulic engineering systems and shifts in subsistence strategies. The findings suggest that the interaction between environmental changes and human innovations played a crucial role in cultural evolution and the long-term sustainability of settlements in the Khuzestan Plain. This study, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between ecological factors and the development of ancient civilizations. |

۱. مقدمه
ما حاصل فرآیندهای پیچیده محیطی ـ اجتماعی هستیم و نگاهمان به جهان بهطور جدی تحت تأثیر این فرآیندها قرار دارد. دیدگاه ما به گذشته نه تنها از شرایط حال، بلکه از چارچوبهای نظری و پارادایمهای فکری که در آن قرار داریم، متأثر است. انتخاب هر موضوع پژوهشی بهطور ناخودآگاه با پیشفرضها، تجربیات شخصی و جهتگیریهای نظری ما مرتبط میشود. آگاهی از نظریهها و چارچوبهای مفهومی به ما امکان میدهد تا دادههای مهم را شناسایی و جمعآوری کنیم و نیز به ما کمک میکند تا این دادهها را در بسترهای معنادار تفسیر و تحلیل نماییم (Hodder, 2012: 45). امروزه، اکثر باستانشناسان رویکردی مفهومی و آگاهانه اتخاذ میکنند و با در نظر گرفتن یک چارچوب نظری صریح و جهتگیری روششناختی مشخص، به جمعآوری و تحلیل دادهها میپردازند (Johnson, 2019: 78). این رویکردها به باستانشناسان کمک میکند تا از توصیف صرف فراتر رفته و به تفسیرهای عمیقتر و جامعتری از گذشته دست یابند.
در باستانشناسی معاصر، سه سطح تحلیلی اصلی وجود دارد: نظریههای سطح پایین (Low-Level Theory)، نظریههای سطح واسط (Middle-Range Theory)، و نظریههای سطح بالا (High-Level Theory). نظریههای سطح پایین عمدتاً بر جمعآوری و توصیف دادهها متمرکز هستند، در حالی که نظریههای سطح واسط به ایجاد پیوند بین دادههای تجربی و تفسیرهای کلیتر کمک میکنند. نظریههای سطح بالا نیز به مسائل کلانتر، مانند تغییرات فرهنگی، ساختارهای اجتماعی و فرآیندهای تاریخی میپردازند (Renfrew & Bahn, 1994: 56-58). این سطوح تحلیلی به باستانشناسان اجازه میدهند تا از جزئیات ملموس تا مفاهیم انتزاعی را در پژوهشهای خود بگنجانند و به درک جامعتری از گذشته دست یابند.
استان خوزستان، به عنوان یکی از پهناورترین و غنیترین مناطق ایران، از دیرباز به دلیل موقعیت استراتژیک خود در مجاورت خلیج فارس، نه تنها از اهمیت فرهنگی و تاریخی برخوردار بوده، بلکه ویژگیهای محیطی منحصربهفردی نیز دارد که آن را به یکی از کانونهای مهم مطالعات باستانشناختی و زیستمحیطی تبدیل کرده است. ارتفاعات جنوبی زاگرس در شمال و شمال شرق استان، همراه با جلگه وسیع شوشان که از نهشتههای دوران کواترنر تشکیل شده است، بستر فرهنگی پایداری را برای استقرارهای انسانی در طول هزاران سال فراهم آورده است. این منطقه به عنوان یکی از نخستین خاستگاههای تمدنهای باستانی، شاهد آغاز نخستین کاوشهای باستانشناختی در ایران بوده و به دلیل غنای محوطههای باستانی، پژوهشها در این منطقه همچنان با شدت ادامه دارد (Potts, 2016: 45).
تحقیقات باستانزمینشناسی تعامل پیچیده بین فعالیتهای انسانی و تغییرات محیطی در این منطقه را آشکار کرده است (Heyvaert et al., 2013). مطالعات اخیر نشان میدهند که تغییرات اقلیمی و محیطی در طول هزارهها تأثیر عمیقی بر الگوهای استقرار و توسعه فرهنگی در خوزستان داشتهاند. برای مثال، دورههای خشکسالی و تغییرات در جریان رودخانهها بهطور مستقیم بر زندگی ساکنان این منطقه تأثیر گذاشته و منجر به جابجایی مراکز جمعیتی و تغییر در شیوههای معیشتی شده است (Rashidian, 2021, 2022). این یافتهها اهمیت رویکردهای میانرشتهای را در مطالعه تاریخ و باستانشناسی خوزستان بیش از پیش آشکار میکند. این مطالعه قصد دارد با برجسته کردن عوامل جغرافیایی، محیطی و اقلیمی، چگونگی شکلگیری استقرارگاهها، الگوی پراکنش محوطهها و نظام معیشتی جوامع عصر هولوسن خوزستان را به بحث بگذارد.
۲. روششناسی
این پژوهش با استفاده از روشهای میانرشتهای، شامل تحلیل دادههای باستانشناسی، ژئومورفولوژی و هیدرولوژی، به بررسی تعاملات انسان و محیط در دشت خوزستان طی عصر هولوسن پرداخته است. دادههای مورد استفاده شامل مطالعات باستانشناسی، جغرافیای طبیعی، اقلیمشناسی و تصاویر ماهوارهای از شرایط زیستمحیطی دشت خوزستان است. برای درک تغییرات محیطی و تأثیر آنها بر الگوهای استقراری، از تلفیق پژوهشهای باستانشناسی، دیریناقلیم و دیرینمحیط استفاده شده است. به بیان دیگر، دادههای هیدرولوژیکی و اقلیمی برای بازسازی شرایط محیطی گذشته بهکار رفتهاند. این رویکرد به پژوهشگران امکان میدهد تا تعاملات پیچیده بین جوامع انسانی و محیط زیست را در طول تاریخ بررسی کنند. نتایج این مطالعه به درک بهتر از تأثیر تغییرات اقلیمی و محیطی بر توسعه فرهنگی و معیشتی جوامع باستانی کمک میکنند.
۳. نظریههای استقرار و توزیع مکانی
پیش از آنکه وارد بحث اصلی شویم، به مهمترین نظریات مرتبط با موضوع الگوهای پراکنش سکونتگاههای باستانی دشت خوزستان نگاهی اجمالی میافکنیم. در دههٔ ۱۹۶۰، گریگوری جانسون بر اساس مطالعاتش در منطقهٔ دیاله و دشت شوشان، نظریهٔ مکان مرکزی را در ارتباط با استقرارگاههای باستانی ارائه کرد (Johnson, 1973). او سه مرکز قدرت سیاسی ـ اقتصادی شامل شوش، ابو فندوا و چغامیش را معرفی کرد و نشان داد که توزیع مکانی این استقرارها در خوزستان نه تنها در دورهٔ اوروک، بلکه در اغلب دورههای فرهنگی، الگوی خطی داشته و عمدتاً در امتداد رودخانهها و جریانهای فصلی شکل گرفته است (Stein, 2001). این الگوهای استقراری نشاندهنده اهمیت دسترسی به منابع آبی و زمینهای حاصلخیز برای جوامع باستانی است.
آدامز و نیسن توزیع استقرارگاهها را در امتداد مسیرهای آبی در منطقه ورکا در دورههای مختلف مستند کردند (Adams & Nissen, 1972). به گفتهٔ افشاری، در دشت رامهرمز استقرارهای دوره هخامنشی در امتداد رودخانهها، مراتع و مسیرهای ارتباطی، بهویژه جاده شاهی شوش ـ تخت جمشید، متمرکز بودند (Afshari, 2021). صفری و همکارانش بر اهمیت مطالعات باستانزمینشناسی در درک الگوهای استقرار تأکید کردند و نقش تغییرات محیطی را در شکلگیری سکونتگاههای انسانی برجسته ساختند (Safari et al., 2019). رشیدیان مفهوم «نهر» را معرفی کرده است؛ یک مسیر آبی ترکیبی از عناصر طبیعی و انسانساخت، که دیدگاه جدیدی در مورد رابطه بین استقرارگاههای باستانی و سیستمهای آبی ارائه میدهد (Rashidian, 2021). این تحقیقات بهطور کلی نقش برجستهٔ منابع آبی و زمینریختشناسی را در شکلگیری الگوهای استقراری باستانی در جنوب غربی ایران تأیید میکنند.
۴. جغرافیا و محیط زیست خوزستان
شرایط جغرافیایی و زیسـتمحیطی خوزستان، علاوه بر مطالعات
باستانشناختی، نیازمند پژوهشهای میانرشتهای در حوزههایی مانند زیستبومشناسی، زمینباستانشناسی و اکولوژی انسانی است تا پیچیدگیهای فرهنگی و محیطی این منطقه بهدرستی تحلیل شوند. دلایل استقرارهای فرهنگی در این حوزه را میتوان با بهرهگیری از نظریات علمی در باستانشناسی و اکولوژی انسانی مورد بررسی قرار داد. استان خوزستان با ویژگیهای جغرافیایی متمایزی شناخته میشود، از جمله کوههای زاگرس در شمال و دشتهای آبرفتی و مناطق باتلاقی در جنوب (عبادی و همکاران، ۱۴۰۲). چهار رودخانه اصلی ـــ کرخه، کارون، مارون و جراحی ـــ نقش حیاتی در آبیاری این منطقه و شکلگیری تمدنهای باستانی ایفا کردهاند (رحمانی و همکاران، ۱۴۰۰).
دشت خوزستان، که امتداد دشت میانرودان محسوب میشود، در مرز بین صفحه عربستان و صفحه ایران قرار دارد. حرکات تکتونیکی باعث بالا آمدن ارتفاعات زاگرس شده و در نتیجه، خوزستان از فلات مرکزی ایران جدا شده است. این فرآیند از دوره پلیوسن (Pliocene) آغاز شده و تاکنون ادامه دارد. فرسایش تدریجی زاگرس و حرکات زمینساختی منجر به رسوبگذاری در این دشت شده است (Lees & Falcon, 1952: 27; Johanson, 1973: 17).
ارتفاعات مشرف به دشت شرقی خوزستان از سازندهای زمینشناختی متعددی از جمله بختیاری، آغاجاری، مشیان، گچساران و آسماری تشکیل شدهاند. سازند بختیاری که روی سازند آغاجاری قرار دارد، متعلق به دوره میو ـ پلیوسن بوده و دارای قلوهسنگهای گرد و کروی است که منشأ آنها به دورههای الیگوسن، ائوسن و کرتاسه بازمیگردد (رامشت، ۱۳۶۶: ۳۳). این رسوبات دارای ترکیباتی شامل ماسه، سیلیس و آهک هستند که تحت تأثیر فرآیندهای زمینشناختی و هیدرولوژیکی تغییر کردهاند (شکلهای ۱ تا ۳).
فرسایش مداوم سازندهای ارتفاعات منجر به افزایش ضخامت رسوبات در دشت شده است. مطالعات انجامشده در دشت دهلران و خوزستان نشان دادهاند که روند نهشتهگذاری از هزارهٔ هشتم قبل از میلاد آغاز شده و تا هزارهٔ دوم قبل از میلاد ادامه داشته است، بهطوری که میزان رسوبگذاری سالانه حدود 6 میلیمتر برآورد شده است (Kirky, 1997; Kouchoukous, 1998). بهطور خاص، تحقیقات میدانی انجامشده در دشت شوشتر، نشان دادهاند که تاریخ نهشتهگذاری این منطقه به اواخر پلیستوسن و اوایل هولوسن، یعنی حدود 56±973۴ سال قبل بازمیگردد که به تأیید نتایج آزمایشهای سنسنجی دانشگاه ویکاتو نیوزیلند رسیده است.
جلگه خوزستان، با شکل مستطیلی و تقریباً هموار، یکی از مهمترین مناطق جغرافیایی و فرهنگی ایران محسوب میشود. عرض این جلگه از حدود ۱۱۰ کیلومتر در شمال تا ۲۰۰ کیلومتر در جنوب متغیر است (افشار سیستانی، ۱۳۸۰: ۳۳). این منطقه به دلیل موقعیت جغرافیایی خاص خود، همواره تحت تأثیر فرآیندهای رسوبگذاری و تغییرات محیطی قرار داشته است. از جمله مهمترین اشکال ژئومورفولوژیکی جلگه خوزستان میتوان به تراسهای قدیمی سیلابی، تاقدیسها، پدیمنتها، مونوکلینها و گالیها اشاره کرد. این اشکال زمینریختی حاصل فرآیندهای طبیعی مانند فرسایش آبی و بادی، حرکات تکتونیکی و رسوبگذاری هستند که در طول هزارهها شکل گرفتهاند (Heyvaert & Baeteman, 2007). این فرآیندها نه تنها بر شکلگیری محیط طبیعی تأثیر گذاشتهاند، بلکه در مکانگزینی استقرارهای فرهنگی و در نهایت، متروکشدن آنها نیز نقش بسزایی داشتهاند. برای مثال، در دورهٔ ایلامی، توسعهٔ استقرارهای انسانی در نیمهٔ غربی دشت شوشتر، بهویژه در کنار رود کارون، احتمالاً در ارتباط با تعارضات بین جوامع کشاورزی و کوچنشینان شرق دشت بوده است (Alizadeh, 2010). این تعاملات پیچیده بین جوامع انسانی و محیط طبیعی، جلگه خوزستان را به یکی از مهمترین مناطق برای مطالعه تاریخ و باستانشناسی ایران تبدیل کرده است.
۱.۴. زمینریختشناسی
محوطههای روستایی دوران پیش از تاریخ اغلب بر روی نهشتههای آبرفتی قدیمی و در نزدیکی پدیدههای زمینریختشناسی نظیر تراسهای رودخانهای قرار گرفتهاند که کمتر تحت تأثیر سیلابهای دورهای بودهاند (Adams, 1981). دشت شرقی شوشان بزرگ شواهدی از سکونت انسان از دوره شوشان میانه تا دورههای اسلامی را نشان میدهد، که در آن استقرارها با شرایط محیطی محلی سازگار شدهاند (Moghaddam, 2012). شواهد حاکی از این است که مناطق شرقی دشت شوشان، نظیر العونه، مدرس 1، درخزینه و برد کارگر، بر روی نهشتههای تراسی و سلیتی شکل گرفتهاند، در حالی که محوطههایی همچون تل حسن، ابو عمود و مشول 2 و 3، بر روی برجستگیهای آبرفتی مونادنوکی ایجاد شدهاند (Alizadeh, 2003). این الگوهای استقراری نشاندهنده تطابق جوامع باستانی با شرایط محیطی و بهرهگیری از منابع طبیعی موجود است.
تغییرات ژئومورفولوژیکی در طول زمان تأثیر قابلتوجهی بر الگوهای استقرار داشتهاند، که در آن دسترسی به آب عاملی کلیدی بوده است (Safari et al., 2019). الگوهای مشابهی در اردن مشاهده شده است، جایی که محوطههای پیشاز تاریخ با اشکال خاص زمین و انواع خاک مرتبط هستند (Cordova et al., 2005). اما، یافتن استقرارگاههای اولیه در دشت علیای خوزستان به دلیل تجمع رسوبات آبرفتی و استقرارهای بعدی که محوطههای قدیمیتر را پوشاندهاند، تا اندازه زیادی دشوار است. برای درک بهتر الگوهای استقرار اولیه، پژوهشگران پیشنهاد میکنند که از تکنیکهای پیشرفتهای مانند سنجش از دور و بررسیهای سطحی فشرده استفاده شود، و همچنین پویایی ویژگیهای جغرافیایی در نظر گرفته شود (Moghaddam, 2019).
۲.۴. زیستبومشناسی
بررسیهای زیستبومشناختی دشت خوزستان نشان میدهد که تحلیل الگوهای استقراری شرق کارون نیازمند بهرهگیری از نظریههای سطح بالا در باستانشناسی است (Redman, 1999). در هولوسن میانه، محوطههای سکونتی در نیمه شرقی دشت عمدتاً بر روی آبرفتهای سیلابی و در نیمه غربی بر روی ترکیبی از نهشتههای رودخانهای و سیلابی شکل گرفتهاند. این احتمال وجود دارد که برخی از محوطههای باستانی زیر لایههای ضخیمی از رسوبات مدفون شده باشند (Lees & Falcon, 1952). این یافتهها نشاندهندهٔ تأثیر فرآیندهای طبیعی مانند فرسایش و رسوبگذاری بر الگوهای استقراری است.
مطالعات باستانزمینشناسی در دشت خوزستان تعاملات پیچیدهای بین استقرارهای انسانی و تغییرات محیطی را آشکار میکند. تحقیقات نشان میدهد که نهشتههای آبرفتی هولوسن تأثیر قابلتوجهی بر تفسیرهای باستانشناختی داشتهاند، بهطوری که فرآیندهای فرسایش و رسوبگذاری، بسیاری از محوطههای باستانی را مدفون یا تخریب کردهاند (Brookes et al., 1982).

نیمه شرقی دشت عمدتاً شامل استقرارگاههایی بر روی رسوبات سیلابی است، در حالی که در نیمه غربی محوطههایی بر روی هر دو نوع رسوبات رودخانهای و سیلابی وجود دارند (Heyvaert et al., 2013). مخاطرات اقلیمی، مانند آنچه در استقرارگاه فیروزه مشاهده شده است، دشتها را بهطور کامل زیر رسوبات آبرفتی مدفون کرده و بر الگوهای استقرار و استراتژیهای مدیریت آب تأثیر گذاشتهاند (Rezaei & Basafa, 2019). در دشت شوشان، تکنیکهای ژئومورفولوژیکی برای درک الگوهای سکونت انسانی و مدیریت میراث باستانشناختی بسیار حیاتی بودهاند. تغییرات طبیعی، بهویژه آنهایی که مرتبط با منابع آبی هستند، بهعنوان عوامل اصلی در تضعیف یا تخریب استقرارها در سراسر دشت در نظر گرفته میشوند (Safari et al., 2019). این یافتهها بر اهمیت ادغام رویکردهای زمینشناسی و باستانشناسی در مطالعه الگوهای استقرار باستانی تأکید میکنند.
۳.۴. اقلیمشناسی
تغییر اقلیمی بزرگ در گذار از پلیستوسن به هولوسن تأثیرات قابلتوجهی بر تعاملات انسان ـ محیط و الگوهای استقراری در دشت خوزستان داشت. با آغاز عصر هولوسن (۱۱۷۰۰ سالپیش)، افزایش دما و رطوبت بهتدریج منجر به تغییر در پوشش گیاهی و در نتیجه، ظهور الگوهای کشاورزی اولیه شد (Barker & Gilbertson, 2000). مطالعات نشان دادهاند که الگوهای استقراری در مناطقی که دارای منابع محیطی کمتر یا تراکم جمعیتی بالاتر بودند، عمدتاً در دشتهای کوچک و دامنههای کمشیب شمالی و شرقی شکل گرفتهاند (Bar-Yosef & Kislev, 1989; Byrd, 2000). برخی از مهمترین این مناطق شامل باغ ملک، قلعه تول، ایذه، مدرس و دشت عقیلی هستند. در هولوسن اولیه (۱۱۷۰۰ ـ ۸۲۰۰ سالپیش)، افزایش نسبی بارشها و تشکیل دریاچههای فصلی منجر به شکلگیری استقرارهای اولیه در پسکرانههای شمال غربی خوزستان شد (Hole, 1987; Safari et al., 2019). در این دوران، افزایش رطوبت، امکان کشاورزی دیم و یکجانشینی اولیه را بهویژه در شمال بینالنهرین فراهم کرد (Engel & Brückner, 2018).
در هولوسن میانه (۸۲۰۰ ـ ۴۲۰۰ سالپیش)، گسترش مردابها و تغییرات رودخانهای باعث جابجایی استقرارها به مناطق پستتر شد (Wilkinson, 2003). این دوران شاهد نوسانات اقلیمی بود که اوج خشکی آن حدود ۴550 سالپیش با وقفههای استقراری در برخی مناطق همزمان شد (Schmidt et al., 2011). نقوش سفالهای پیش از تاریخی کشفشده از محوطههای شوشان نشاندهندهٔ حضور گستردهٔ پوشش گیاهی در دوران هولوسن میانه است (شکل ۴). اما، هولوسن جدید (۴۲۰۰ سالپیش تاکنون)، به دلیل رویدادهای اقلیمی خشک و افت تراز آبهای زیرزمینی، شاهد توسعهٔ سیستمهای آبیاری در مقیاس بزرگ بود که کانال مصنوعی گرگر نمونهای از آن است (Alizadeh et al., 2004).
بررسیهای فرانک هول (Hole, 1987) در دشتهای دهلران و شوشان نشان دادهاند که از زمان استقرار نخستین زیستگاهها، ضخامت رسوبات به چهار متر رسیده است. محوطههای باستانی همچون چغامیش، چغابنوت و بنه فضیلی شواهدی از شیوههای معیشتی ترکیبی شامل کشاورزی و دامداری ارائه میدهند که رشد جمعیتی آنها از هولوسن قدیم تا میانه ادامه داشته است. در این دوره، نهرها و مسیرهای آبی منطقه به شکل پایداری در جریان بودهاند و بر استقرارهای انسانی تأثیر گذاشتهاند (دلفوس، ۱۳۷۶). همچنین، مطالعات نشان دادهاند که درههای کوچک میانکوهی به عنوان مناطق ییلاقی کوچندگان دامدار عمل کردهاند (Mandel, 1992). بنابراین، در طول هولوسن، استقرارگاهها با تغییرات محیطی سازگار شدند، مکانشان بسته به موقعیت ظرفیتهای محیطی تغییر یافت و استراتژیهای معیشتی تعدیل شدند. با این حال، رابطه بین تغییرات اقلیمی و تطورات فرهنگی پیچیده است و لذا باید در نسبت دادن صرف تغییرات اجتماعی به عوامل محیطی احتیاط کنیم (Engel & Brückner, 2018; Schmidt et al., 2011).
۴.۴. رودخانهها
رودخانههای کارون، دز و کرخه نقش مهمی در تحولات محیطی و استقرارهای انسانی در جنوب غربی ایران ایفا کردهاند (شکل ۵). تغییر مسیر این رودخانهها در دورههای مختلف، باعث ایجاد ماندرها و تالابهایی شد که زیستگاههای مناسبی برای جوامع انسانی فراهم کردند (Stein, 2001). در هولوسن میانه، افزایش دبی رودخانهها و تشکیل مردابهای کانالی، موجب بهبود اکوسیستمهای گیاهی و جانوری شد که در نتیجه، الگوهای استقراری متنوعتری در منطقه ایجاد گردید (Redman, 1999). با این حال، در هولوسن جدید، تغییرات اقلیمی و کاهش سطح آبهای زیرزمینی باعث کاهش دبی رودخانهها و در نتیجه، کاهش منابع آبی شد که تأثیرات منفی بر استقرارگاههای انسانی داشت (Bettis, 1992).

هیوارت و همکاران (Heyvaert et al., 2012) شواهدی از تغییرات مسیر رودخانهٔ کرخه متأثیر از فعالیتهای انسانی ارائه داده و نشان میدهند که انحراف مسیر رودخانهها تحت تأثیر عواملی مانند روشهای آبیاری و فرآیندهای رسوبگذاری بوده است. والسترا و همکاران (Walstra et al., 2010a) بر نقش مهم فعالیتهای انسانی در تکامل مخروطافکنه بزرگ کارون تأکید میکنند، در حالی که موروزووا (Morozova, 2005) رویدادهای انحراف مسیر رودخانهها را به ظهور و سقوط تمدنها در جنوب بینالنهرین مرتبط میداند. علاوه بر این، افخمی (Afkhami, 2003) چالشهای ناشی از شوری در حوضه کارون ـ دز را بررسی کرده که تأثیرات نامطلوبی بر اکوسیستمهای محلی و کیفیت آب داشته است. این مطالعات بهطور کلی تعامل پیچیده بین فرآیندهای طبیعی و فعالیتهای انسانی در شکلگیری چشماندازهای محیطی و فرهنگی منطقه را نشان میدهند.
۵. عوامل مؤثر در شکلگیری استقرارگاههای خوزستان
عوامل مختلفی در شکلگیری استقرارگاههای انسانی در عصر هولوسن در دشت خوزستان نقش داشتهاند. جنگ، دادوستد، فناوری، ایدئولوژی، قانونمندی اجتماعی و تراکم جمعیت از جمله عوامل فرهنگی تأثیرگذار بودهاند (Pollock, 1999). در کنار این عوامل، ویژگیهای زیستبومشناختی نیز در تنظیم انرژی زیستی منطقه نقش کلیدی ایفا کردهاند. مهمترین این ویژگیها عبارتاند از:
۱.۵. شرایط محیطی
ارتفاعات زاگرس، با قلل برفگیر الوند و بختیاری، نقش مهمی در تأمین منابع آبی و پایداری زیستگاههای انسانی در دورههای باستانی داشتهاند (Johnson, 1973). دامنههای پوشیده از مراتع و درختان شرایط مطلوبی را برای دامداری فراهم کردهاند. در دورههایی که شرایط دشت خوزستان به دلیل جنگ یا تغییرات اقلیمی نامساعد شده است، دشتهای میانکوهی به عنوان مأمن کوچندگان عمل کردهاند (Redman, 1999). این مناطق به دلیل دسترسی به منابع آب و مراتع، شرایط مناسبی برای دامداری و کشاورزی فراهم کردهاند (Alizadeh, 2003).
دشتهای آبرفتی خوزستان و دشتهای میانکوهی لرستان و بختیاری از پیش از تاریخ تاکنون بستر استقرارگاههای عشایری بودهاند (Adams, 1981). منطقه میان ارتفاعات و دشت تحت عنوان «اتکتون» (Etecton) شناخته میشود که کمربندی کوهستانی را شامل شده و توسط رودخانههای پرآب به درههایی تقسیم شده است که مسیر عبور کوچندگان را تشکیل میدهند. این مناطق به دلیل دسترسی به منابع آب و مراتع، شرایط مناسبی برای دامداری و کشاورزی فراهم کردهاند (Alizadeh, 2003).
تنگهها به دلیل عبور رودخانهها و دشواری دسترسی، نقش مهمی در استقرارهای باستانی داشتهاند. برای نمونه، مطالعات راه ارتباطی شوشتر به مسجد سلیمان نشان میدهد که عبور از این مسیرها تا پیش از احداث جادههای جدید امکانپذیر نبوده است (Lees & Falcon, 1952). این مسیرها نه تنها به عنوان راههای تجاری، بلکه به عنوان مسیرهای مهاجرتی برای جوامع کوچرو عمل میکردهاند (Wilkinson, 2003).
۱.۱.۵. نظام معیشتی کوچرو ـ گلهداری
کوههای زاگرس و دشت خوزستان برای هزارهها نقش حیاتی در کوچنشینی و دامداری عشایری در ایران ایفا کردهاند (Matthews & Fazeli, 2022; Potts, 2014; Alizadeh, 2010). مهاجرتهای فصلی بین مناطق مرتفع و پست از دوران باستان انجام میشده است، بهطوری که عشایر در زمستان به دشت خوزستان کوچ میکردند و در تابستان به ارتفاعات بالاتر بازمیگشتند (Alizadeh et al., 2004; Salzman, 1972). این مهاجرتها با نیاز به مراتع تازه و آبوهوای مناسب برای دامها صورت میگرفت (Salzman, 1972). شواهد باستانشناسی نشان میدهد که دامداری سیار در منطقه زاگرس ممکن است از دوره مسسنگی آغاز شده باشد، و محوطههایی مانند توه خوشکه اطلاعاتی درباره سکونتگاههای موقتی اولیه دامداری ارائه میدهند (Abdi et al., 2002). توسعه دامداری در این منطقه با استفاده از روشهای مختلفی مانند تحلیل ایزوتوپی برای ردیابی ریشههای کوچ عمودی مورد مطالعه قرار گرفته است (Mashkour, 2003). این شیوههای دامداری تأثیر قابلتوجهی بر الگوهای استقراری، استفاده از زمین و تعاملات فرهنگی در منطقه داشتهاند (Alizadeh et al., 2004; Abdi et al., 2002).
مطالعات باستانشناسی نشان میدهد که بازتاب رخدادهای فرهنگی دشت خوزستان را میتوان در مناطق مرتفع زاگرس از جمله ایذه و فریدن مشاهده کرد. رشتهکوه بختیاری که بهعنوان بخشی از مرتفعترین نواحی زاگرس محسوب میشود، همچون سدی میان فلات مرکزی ایران و جلگه رسوبی خوزستان عمل کرده است (Stein, 2001). زمستانهای سرد و دامنههای برفگیر این نواحی، عشایر کوچنده را وادار میساخته است تا برای بقای خود و دامهایشان مسیرهای صعبالعبور کوهستانی را طی کرده و نیمهٔ دوم سال را در مراتع تازه دشت خوزستان سپری کنند (Abdi, 2003). اگرچه بسیاری از کوچروها در سده اخیر یکجانشین شدهاند، اما الگوی کوچ افقی آنها همچنان ادامه دارد. این روند مهاجرت فصلی از هزارههای پیشین بین مناطق مرتفع و پست برقرار بوده است (Hole, 1987).
۲.۵. عوامل هیدرولوژیکی
مطالعات هیدرولوژیکی در دشت خوزستان نقش مهمی در درک پراکندگی استقرارهای فرهنگی و روند تحولات اکولوژیکی این منطقه داشتهاند. تحولات هیدرولوژیکی در عصر هولوسن، شامل تغییر مسیر رودخانهها، ایجاد تالابهای فصلی و افزایش سطح آبهای زیرزمینی، بر استقرارگاههای انسانی تأثیر گذاشت (Lees & Falcon, 1952). نیلی (Neely, 1974) استقرار و تراکمهای فرهنگی دورهٔ سوزیانا را در چشمانداز طبیعی خوزستان بررسی کرده است. آدامز (Adams, 1966) نقشه پراکندگی محوطههای باستانی دشت شوشان را تهیه کرده و کریستینسن (Christensen, 1993) به توصیف این محوطهها پرداخته است.
تحقیقات نشان میدهد که اوج تراکم جمعیتی این منطقه در دوره اشکانی شکل گرفته و در دوره ساسانی، افزایش شهرنشینی به دلیل سیاستهای توسعهای در حوزهٔ مدیریت منابع آب شدت یافته است (Wilkinson, 2003). ساسانیان نقش کلیدی در توسعه سیستمهای مدیریت آب در خوزستان ایفا کردند. یکی از مهمترین اقدامات این دوره، ساخت سد شاپور اول (2۴0-272 میلادی) بر روی کارون به طول 600 متر بود که نقش مهمی در آبیاری زمینهای کشاورزی ایفا کرد (Adams, 1966; Christensen, 1993). همچنین، احداث کانال مسرقان یا گرگر موجب رونق کشاورزی در جنوب شوشتر شد (Wilkinson, 2003). با اینحال، افزایش استفاده از سازههای آبی و بالا رفتن سطح نمک در خاک، کاهش تدریجی بهرهوری کشاورزی و در نتیجه، کاهش جمعیت در برخی مناطق از جمله شوشتر را به دنبال داشت.
تحقیقات نشان میدهد که عمدتاً طی هزارهٔ پنجم قبل از میلاد، استقرارگاههای پیش از تاریخی در نیمهٔ شرقی دشت خوزستان تحت تأثیر مسیلهای فصلی شکل گرفتند که در مسیر رودخانهٔ کارون قرار داشتند (Johnson, 1973). محوطههای باستانی مهم این دوره شامل تپه هندی (KS248)، تپه داروغه (KS1593)، و تپه مشول 3 (KS1617) هستند که بقایای فرهنگی مربوط به هزارهٔ پنجم قبل از میلاد را در خود جای دادهاند. در مناطق بدلندهای شرقی، استقرارهای عصر هولوسن متأثر از منابع آبی فصلی مانند چشمهها و تالابهای موقتی بودند (Pollock, 1999). نمونههایی از این استقرارها شامل تپه العونه، تپه چم فرج 1 و زرگانیه هستند که شواهدی از تداوم فرهنگی آنها تا دوره اوروک و ایلامی بهدست آمده است. انحراف رودخانه کارون از دوران ایلامی به سمت غرب باعث ایجاد ماندرهایی به شکل یوغ گاو (bow Ox) شد که زیستگاههای مناسبی برای گیاهان مردابی و حیات وحش فراهم کردند (Stein, 2001; Wilkinson, 2003). بر بلندای این ماندرها، استقرارهای فرهنگی مهمی از جمله استقرارهای دوره شوش D و ایلامی شکل گرفتند.
دریاچهٔ پیون ایذه در حدود ۱۷ تا ۲۰ هزارسالپیش، همزمان با خشکشدن دورهای خلیج فارس، میتوانسته محل استقرارهای انسانی بوده باشد (رامشت 1380: 105). در جنوب و جنوب غربی این دریاچه، سه محوطه فراپارینهسنگی شناسایی شدهاند که شواهدی از تداوم زیست تا هزارهٔ پنجم و چهارم پیش از میلاد را نشان میدهند (Wilkinson, 2003). این استقرارگاهها نشاندهندهٔ تطابق جوامع باستانی با تغییرات محیطی و بهرهگیری از منابع آبی و غذایی موجود است.
۳.۵. نزولات جوّی
در طی هولوسن اولیه، افزایش بارشها و ایجاد تالابهای کوچک در گودیها منجر به شکلگیری استقرارگاههای کوتاهمدت در حاشیه این تالابها شد. شواهد نشان میدهد که طی هولوسن میانه، افزایش دبی رودخانهها و تشکیل مردابهای کانالی، موجب بهبود اکوسیستمهای گیاهی و جانوری شد که در نتیجه، الگوهای استقراری متنوعتری در منطقه ایجاد شد (Redman, 1999). ظهور تصاویری از پرندگان دریایی بر روی سفالهای سوزیانای جدید 2 و یافتن بقایای استخوانهای پرندگان و صدفهای مردابی، نشاندهندهٔ نقش این اکوسیستمها در استقرارهای فرهنگی منطقه است.
۶. تأثیر فعالیتهای انسانی بر نهشتههای باستانشناختی
مطالعات باستانشناسی و باستانزمینشناسی نشان میدهند که
سکونتگاههای اولیه در هزارههای ششم تا چهارم پیش از میلاد، پراکنده و نیمهدائم بودند و به کشاورزی مبتنی بر بارش ـ سیلاب و دامداری در مقیاس کوچک اتکا داشتند (Alizadeh et al., 2004). فعالیتهای کشاورزی و آبیاری از دورههای تاریخی تا دوران معاصر، تغییرات عمدهای در نهشتههای دشت خوزستان ایجاد کردهاند. این فعالیتها باعث افزایش رسوبگذاری و تغییر در الگوهای استقراری شدهاند (Kouchoukos, 1998).
در دوره ساسانی، ساخت سدها و کانالهای آبیاری باعث افزایش رسوبگذاری و تغییرات ریختشناسی در چشمانداز مناطق جنوبی دشت خوزستان شد (Adams, 1962; Walstra et al., 2010a). همچنین، فعالیتهای انسانی مانند جنگلزدایی و کشاورزی گسترده باعث افزایش فرسایش خاک و تغییر در الگوهای رسوبگذاری شدهاند (Mandel, 1992). این تغییرات هم بر محیط طبیعی تأثیر گذاشتهاند و هم باعث تغییر در الگوهای استقراری و شیوههای معیشتی جوامع باستانی شدهاند (Hole, 1987).
در طول تاریخ، بهرهبرداری از زمین و آب، نقش کلیدی در توسعهٔ سریع مخروطافکنهها و حفظ شیبهای کم داشته است (Walstra et al., 2010b). ساخت و تخریب سدها باعث انحرافهای مکرر در بخشهای پاییندست رودخانه کارون شده و بر تغییرات مسیر رودخانه و الگوهای استقراری تأثیر گذاشته است (Walstra et al., 2010a). مطالعات زمینباستانشناسی، از جمله تحلیل تصاویر ماهوارهای و تاریخگذاری لومینسانس، در درک تعامل پیچیده بین فعالیتهای انسانی و تغییرات محیطی در منطقه بسیار مؤثر بودهاند (Safari et al., 2019).
۷. جمعبندی
شواهد باستانشناختی و تحلیلهای هیدرولوژیکی نشان میدهند که توسعه و تغییر مسیر رودخانهها، نوسانات سطح آبهای زیرزمینی و تغییرات الگوهای بارندگی نقش تعیینکنندهای در شکلگیری و زوال استقرارهای فرهنگی در دشت خوزستان ایفا کردهاند. در دوره هولوسن قدیم، استقرارهای انسانی عمدتاً در مناطق مرتفعتر شکل گرفتند، در حالی که در هولوسن میانه، تغییرات مسیر رودخانهها و گسترش مردابها منجر به جابجایی استقرارها به مناطق پستتر شد. در هولوسن جدید، کاهش سطح آبهای سطحی و زیرزمینی و وقوع رویدادهای اقلیمی شدید، زمینهساز توسعه سیستمهای مهندسی آبی و تحول شیوههای معیشتی گردید (Bettis, 1992; Pournelle, 2003).
تغییرات هیدرولوژیکی، بهویژه در دورههای اوروک و ایلامی، همراه با مهاجرتهای انسانی و تبادلات منطقهای، به طور قابل توجهی الگوهای استقراری را تحت تأثیر قرار دادند. دادههای حاصل از مطالعات میدانی و تحلیل تصاویر ماهوارهای نشان میدهند که محوطههای باستانی مدفون در رسوبات هنوز پتانسیل بالایی برای ارائه اطلاعات ارزشمند در مورد دگرگونیهای زیستمحیطی و فرهنگی این منطقه دارند (Alizadeh, 2008). بنابراین، تلفیق دادههای باستانشناسی و ژئومورفولوژی میتواند درک جامعتری از تعاملات پیچیده بین انسان و محیط زیست در طول تاریخ فراهم آورد (Fisher et al., 2009).
این یافتهها نه تنها بر اهمیت مطالعات میانرشتهای در باستانشناسی تأکید میکنند، بلکه لزوم توجه به تغییرات محیطی در تحلیلهای تاریخی و فرهنگی را نیز برجسته میسازند. برای دستیابی به نتایج دقیقتر، انجام پژوهشهای بیشتر با استفاده از روشهای پیشرفته مانند ژئوفیزیک و سنجش از دور توصیه میشود (Johnson, 2006).
۸. نتیجهگیری
بررسی شواهد باستانشناختی و زمینشناختی در دشت خوزستان نشان میدهد که فرآیندهای نهشتهگذاری طی عصر هولوسن (و پیش از آن) بهطور پیوسته ادامه داشته و تغییرات اقلیمی و فعالیتهای انسانی نقش تعیینکنندهای در شکلگیری دشتهای آبرفتی این منطقه ایفا کردهاند. مطالعات انجامشده حاکی از آن است که منابع آبی، ظرفیتهای زیستمحیطی و الگوهای استقراری بهطور متقابل بر یکدیگر تأثیر گذاشتهاند و در توزیع جمعیتهای انسانی در طول تاریخ این منطقه نقش کلیدی داشتهاند. تغییرات اقلیمی و زمینساختی هم بر شکلگیری سکونتگاههای اولیه تأثیر گذاشتهاند و هم در زوال برخی از این سکونتگاهها مؤثر بودهاند. تعامل بین تغییرات محیطی و نوآوریهای انسانی، مانند توسعهٔ سیستمهای آبیاری، تأثیر بسزایی در تکامل فرهنگی و پایداری استقرارهای بلندمدت در دشت خوزستان داشته است. این پژوهش با تمرکز بر اهمیت رویکردهای بینرشتهای، مانند ترکیب دادههای باستانشناسی، دیریناقلیمشناسی و ژئومورفولوژی، تعاملات پیچیدهٔ انسان و محیط در منطقهٔ خوزستان طی عصر هولوسن را به بحث گذاشت. چنین رویکردهایی نه تنها به بازسازی پیشینهٔ محیطی و فرهنگی دشت خوزستان کمک میکنند، بلکه زمینه را برای درک بهتر پاسخهای فرهنگی و سازگاریهای انسانی با تغییرات اقلیمی ـ محیطی در سایر مناطق مشابه فراهم میسازند. این یافتهها اهمیت توجه به دگرگونیهای محیطزیستی در تحلیلهای تاریخی و فرهنگی را بیش از پیش آشکار مینمایند و بر لزوم انجام پژوهشهای بیشتر با استفاده از روشهای پیشرفته تأکید میکنند.
