Abstract :

There are fundamental disagreements regarding the intellect and its functions. Some believe in the absolute validity of reason, while others limit the capabilities of the intellect to phenomena. Khwaja Tusi attributes three functions to the intellect. The first is the discovery function, which involves understanding the phenomena of the real world. The second is the evaluative function, which determines the goodness or badness of actions. The third is the  controlling function, which is the same as the will or practical reason, commanding and forbidding actions for human life. There is a close relationship between the functions of the intellect, but theoretical reason is superior because it is concerned with both the transcendent world and the basis of practical reason. However, practical reason is concerned with managing the body and its consequences. This article examines the nature of the intellect and its functions analytically and descriptively, answering the question of what the intellect is and what its functions are
