Redescription of epistemological foundationalism in Islamic philosophy: Considering the discussion of conceptual metaphors

Abstract :

Foundationalism is accepted as the theory of justification of knowledge among the majority of Muslim thinkers, especially three philosophers of the school - i.e. Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra .The question is: "Why are we facing the predominance of fundamentalism in this tradition?" Considering the discussion of conceptual metaphors, it can be said that the existence of the metaphor of "knowledge as a building" can lead to the fact that the Muslim philosopher is searching for the basis for the foundation of knowledge when he is thinking about the justification of knowledge. By examining the texts of the three philosophers in question, we can propose a new description that the existence of the presupposition of the duality of mind and object, as well as the assumption of the hierarchy of things in the field of existence and perception, has been effective in the formation of the above metaphor. The importance of addressing this issue is due to the fact that Muslim philosophers have tried to eliminate the duality and implication of fundamentalism, but their lack of effort to find a language that is compatible with this meaning has not led to a real solution to the problem. The re-description of this situation can lead to new discussions in the justification of cognition by providing the possibility of introducing new metaphors.
