The language and cognitive and behavioral messages of the Quran

Abstract :

The purpose of the present study is to examine the messages and language of the Qur’an in selected Surahs (al-A‘rāf, al-Qaṣaṣ, al-Mā’idah, and al-Tawbah). This research employed both qualitative and quantitative content analysis methods. The findings indicate that in the Meccan Surahs, the number of cognitive messages amounts to 77 cases, while the number of behavioral-recommendatory messages reaches 40 cases. In contrast, in the Medinan Surahs, the number of cognitive messages is 17 cases, and the number of behavioral-recommendatory messages is 31 cases. In the analysis of two major Meccan Surahs (al-A‘rāf and al-Qaṣaṣ), which together comprise 294 verses, the frequency percentage of cognitive messages is 26%, which, being devoted to the knowledge and insight of Muslims, is higher than that of behavioral-recommendatory messages. In two major Medinan Surahs (al-Mā’idah and al-Tawbah), which together consist of 249 verses, the frequency percentage of behavioral-recommendatory messages is 13%, which is higher than that of cognitive messages. Therefore, in the two Meccan Surahs (al-A‘rāf and al-Qaṣaṣ), greater emphasis has been placed on cognitive-epistemic messages, whereas in the two Medinan Surahs (al-Mā’idah and al-Tawbah), explicit emphasis has been placed on behavioral-recommendatory messages.
