The Effect of Music on Elementary School Students Creativity and Mathematical Academic Achievement

Abstract :
Aim:The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of music on the creativity and academic achievement of elementary school students in a comparative- causal method. Method: The statistical population of the research included all students in music classes in Shiraz city in 2022, who were selected purposefully. In this regard, 50 elementary school students in Shiraz who had received music training were selected with 50 students who were matched based on gender and educational level and did not receive music training. In the research, two tools including the Torrance Creativity Scale (1974) and the mathematical test made by the researcher were used. The validity and reliability of the instruments were checked and SPSS software (version 24) was used for data analysis. Findings: The findings showed that there is a significant difference in creativity and its dimensions in favor of students who have received music training. In terms of group and gender interaction, no significant difference was observed. Also, in examining the difference between the dimensions of creativity in students who have received music training, the results showed that the dimension of fluency had the highest average and the dimension of originality showed the lowest average. Also, no significant difference was observed in students' math score based on group, gender, group interaction and gender. Conclusion: The present study was a confirmation of the role of music education in developing students' creativity. Order, coordination, fluency and the power of innovation, accuracy and attention in dealing with music are factors that play an important role in fostering creativity, and it seems that the attention of planners and teachers is necessary.
