Abstract :
Urban planning, as both a science and an art, plays a vital role in improving the quality of life and enhancing environmental sustainability. With the increasing population and rapid urban development, land use zoning and the designation of public uses have become key principles in urban planning. This article conducts a comparative analysis of the urban planning systems in Iran and the United States, aiming to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each system. The choice of the United States as a significant case study in this research is based on its extensive and diverse experience in urban planning, successful models for providing public services, attention to sustainable development, effective legal reforms and policies, and the availability of rich scientific resources and empirical studies. The Iranian urban planning system faces multiple challenges, including a lack of coordination between urban policies and the real needs of society, a shortage of public spaces, and inefficiencies in resource management. These issues can lead to social and environmental crises. In contrast, the United States, with its diverse experiences and innovative approaches such as active community participation in the planning process and emphasis on environmental sustainability, can offer valuable models for Iran. The results of this analysis indicate that the Iranian urban planning system, with its rich history and focus on cultural identity, has strengths that can contribute to urban development. However, challenges such as the lack of coordination among various institutions and the shortage of public spaces necessitate fundamental reforms. Conversely, the U.S. urban planning system, with its emphasis on participatory planning and the use of modern technologies, is considered a successful model for Iran. This analysis not only helps identify the challenges and opportunities within the urban planning systems of both countries but also enables policymakers and urban planners to design and implement more effective and efficient policies aimed at sustainable urban development by leveraging the successful experiences of other countries.
