A critical review of reports by officers of the British Royal Navy A Case Study of Bandar Abbas

Abstract :
Contrary to the perception of Iranian seafaring weakness presented by British political agents, the reports of English mariners in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were compiled using information from local surveyors of the Persian Gulf and aimed to facilitate the entry of the British Navy into the region. These reports, often cited without verification, can skew historical research if geographic, social, and economic conditions are not considered. This research, using Bandar Abbas as a case study, demonstrates the need for a critical re-evaluation of these reports. The research method is descriptive-analytical and based on library studies. Findings show that British naval officers' reports were selective and their accuracy was directly proportional to British political and economic interests. Relying on these reports without re-evaluation and comparative analysis with domestic sources is untenable. This research, by presenting a novel approach to the analysis of nautical reports, contributes to a more accurate understanding of the history of the Persian Gulf and Iranian-British relations.
