Abstract :

The development of rural settlements for tourism purposes is a key factor in regional and national development due to the intrinsic connection between rural and urban progress. Without attention to this linkage, sustainable development cannot be achieved. This research aims to identify environmental factors influencing the satisfaction of residents in traditional and newly developed rural tourism settlements in Ilam Province. Using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological method grounded in theory, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 21 experts—including architects, sociologists, psychologists, and tourism specialists—selected through purposive snowball sampling. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA software through open, axial, and selective coding. Findings indicate that the causal factors affecting residents’ satisfaction include settlement development, welfare services, capital provision, and preservation of cultural identity. Strategies for improving satisfaction involve ecosystem protection, welfare and tourism planning, communication network development, infrastructure enhancement, and natural resource management. These strategies lead to positive outcomes such as increased tourist satisfaction, strengthened social solidarity, job creation, economic growth, reduced social harms, and enhanced sustainability.
