The Comparative Study of Text and Image in the Khusrow and Shirin Narrative Based on Vladimir Prop's Morphology

Abstract :

The morphology is a fundamental topic in literary criticism that involves examining the internal structure of stories and discovering the actions and personas present within them. Prop was the first to analyze stories based on morphology and to interpret Russian folk tales accordingly. He divided narration into different functions and characters. These characteristics can also be observed in Iranian narrations. Given the alignment of literature with Iranian miniature painting, Prop's morphological model can also be identified and examined in Iranian illustrations. This research aims to identify and compare the story and illustrations of the Khusrow and Shirin narrative based on Prop's morphological model. It seeks to answer the following questions: Which of the functions and characters presented in Prop's morphology are observed in the illustrations and the narration of Khusrow and Shirin? What similarities and differences do the text and illustrations of the Khusrow and Shirin narrative have according to Prop's morphological model?  The research method is descriptive-analytical, and the data collection is bibliographical. For this purpose, 12 images based on the storyline of Khusrow and Shirin from the Herat school were selected and matched with the text of the story according to Prop's theory. The results show that 30 functions from Prop's model are observed in the narration, and 19 functions are visible in the illustrations of Khusrow and Shirin. All types of characters are identifiable in the illustrations, some of which have multiple functions. Additionally, different states, knotting, and obstacles that create tension and appeal in the story are also present in the illustrations.
