Critical Discourse Analysis of the Novel ‘Utopia’ by Ahmed Khaled Tawfik in Light of Teun van Dijk’s Theory

Abstract :
This research analyzes Ahmed Khaled Tawfik’s novel “Utopia” using Teun van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis framework. It examines how discourse constructs imbalanced power relations and entrenches the class divide between “Utopia’s” wealthy inhabitants and the deprived “Others.” The methodology analyzes macro/micro discursive structures, self/other representation strategies, and implicit ideologies.
The analysis focuses on key scenes, including contrasting world descriptions, character portrayals, and the “hunting” scene as an embodiment of violence. Applying Van Dijk’s ideological square model reveals the author’s use of ideological strategies and representation of social inequality. Notably, both Utopians and Others participate in constructing this ideological square, each promoting a positive self-image while denigrating the other, reinforcing class schism.
The study concludes that language in “Utopia” is not neutral but a tool for symbolic domination, dehumanizing the “Other” and legitimizing violence in its dystopian world. Through inter-class discourse, the author reveals symbolic violence in contemporary societies, making language a mirror of class and political injustice.
