The mediating role of basic psychological needs in the relationship between perceived educational expectations and academic identity in adolescents.

Abstract :
Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of basic psychological needs in the relationship between perceived educational expectations and educational identity in adolescents. The design of this study was correlational and utilized structural equation modeling. Four schools (two for girls and two for boys) were selected from regions 1 and 2 of Zanjan city in the academic year 2022-2023 using a clustering method. Questionnaires were distributed among 400 students. The research instruments included the Educational Identity Questionnaire (AIS, Vaz et al., 2009), Psychological Needs Questionnaire (PNQ, LaGuardia et al., 2000), and Educational Expectations Scale (AESI, Ang et al., 2006). Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that the proposed research model was a good fit. In the direct path coefficients, perceived educational expectations had a positive and significant effect on psychological needs (P<0.001). In contrast, educational expectations and psychological needs had a negative and significant impact on late, confused, and follower identities (P<0.001). Additionally, in the indirect coefficients, it was determined that educational expectations, mediated by psychological needs, had a positive and significant effect on successful identity (P<0.001), but this effect was negative on late, confused, and follower identities (P<0.001). It can be concluded that perceived educational expectations and basic psychological needs positively influence successful identity styles but negatively affect other identity styles.
