An Analysis of the Depiction of Ugliness in Characters from Ajāyeb al-Makhlūqāt and The History of Monsters from the Perspective of Umberto Eco

Abstract :
Introduction
Thinkers in every historical period have offered various definitions of beauty, positioning it as a central concept in philosophical, artistic, and religious discourses. In contrast, the concept of ugliness has received significantly less attention and is often described merely as the opposite of beauty. However, this binary confrontation is overly simplistic and fails to capture the depth and diversity of meanings that ugliness can convey. Umberto Eco’s approach to ugliness in the history of Western art provides a comprehensive and interpretative framework for understanding how ugliness has been visually and textually represented throughout history. Traces of ugliness are found not only in artistic images but also in written descriptions of objects, creatures, or individuals perceived as abnormal, grotesque, or unnatural. This study aims to investigate how ugliness is conceptualized and represented from Eco’s perspective, by analyzing and comparing eight selected hybrid characters from two significant historical texts: Ajāyeb al-Makhlūqāt by Zakariya Qazvini (7th century AH / 13th century AD, Iran), and The History of Monsters (Monstrorum Historia) by Ulisse Aldrovandi (11th century AH / 17th century AD, Italy)
Methodology
This research is conducted using a qualitative and comparative approach, relying on both library sources and digital databases. The focus is on the representation of ugliness in composite or hybrid beings as described in the two selected works. Drawing on Umberto Eco’s theory, ugliness is categorized into three types: intrinsic or moral ugliness, external or physical ugliness, and artistic or symbolic representations of ugliness. This tripartite classification serves as the basis for the comparative analysis, allowing the researcher to examine the visual and narrative construction of monstrous beings in each book. Four characters from each source were selected to ensure a balanced and insightful comparison
Results
The analysis reveals that both Qazvini and Aldrovandi categorize beings that deviate from known natural forms, but their approaches differ significantly. In Ajāyeb al-Makhlūqāt, the beings are entirely mythical and are based on inherited traditions, religious narratives, and classical literature. These figures are presented in a symbolic and moralizing context. In contrast, Aldrovandi’s History of Monsters includes a mixture of mythical and empirically observed creatures. His work reflects the influence of Renaissance naturalism and scientific curiosity, often documenting physical anomalies through observation and classification
Conclusion
The findings show that although both authors drew on cultural imagination, religious beliefs, and literary traditions, Aldrovandi’s attention to physical anomalies marked a shift toward scientific reasoning. By documenting real cases of deformity, he treated monstrosity as part of natural diversity, transforming ugliness from a purely symbolic concept into an object of scientific study. Thus, Eco’s theoretical framework effectively reveals the evolving perception of ugliness between the medieval Islamic world and Renaissance Europe
