Comparison of self-esteem and emotional processing and communication skills in people with small domestic dogs and large domestic dogs

Abstract :

The present study was conducted to compare self-esteem and emotional processing and communication skills in people with small domestic dogs and large domestic dogs. The current research is a descriptive, comparative causal research in terms of practical purpose and in terms of data collection. The statistical population of the research was made up of all the people who had pet dogs in the east of Tehran in 1403, and 40 men and 40 women, half of whom had small dogs and the other half had large dogs, were selected to conduct the research. Three questionnaires were used to conduct the present research, which are: 1- Jarabak Communication Skills Questionnaire (2004); 2- Cooper Smith Self-Esteem Questionnaire (1987) (SEI; 3- Emotional Processing Questionnaire of Baker et al. (2010). In order to analyze the findings, the information was modified and processed using the SPSS software package version 28 and one-dimensional tables for all variables or questions were obtained. The inferential statistics included the t-test and the analysis of variance. The findings of the study showed that there is a difference between the self-esteem scores in the groups with large and small dogs (p<0.05) and the self-esteem scores in the groups with large dogs. There is also a difference between emotional processing scores in groups with large and small dogs (p<0.05), and emotional processing scores are higher in groups with large dogs, there is a difference (p<0.05) and the scores of communication skills are higher in the groups with big dogs. The research findings also showed that there is no significant relationship between gender and the scores of the research variables and gender doesn’t affect on the scores of the variables.
