Abstract :
Salvia tebesana is a plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Its leaves are both medicinal and edible. This botanical is recognized in both traditional and modern medicine for its ability to treatment of cholera, colds, a range of fevers, liver disorders, menstrual challenges, hepatitis, epilepsy, and paralysis, with its healing properties linked to diterpenoid compounds. This research focuses on analyzing the phytochemical composition of Salvia tebesana and investigating the antioxidant and antibacterial effects of its methanol extract and the fractions obtained through chromatography. The extraction and fractionation were conducted through column chromatography, followed by assessments of antioxidant and antibacterial properties using DPPH and MIC methodologies. Ultimately, 51 fractions were isolated that there were pooled into 8 fractions based on similar thin layer chromatography (TLC). The studied fractions showed different levels of DPPH free radical scavenging activity ranging from 26.12±1.14 µg/mL (fraction number 5) to 105.3±1.67 µg/mL (fraction number 1). Fraction number 4 has the highest sensitivity against the bacterial species Streptococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, while fraction number 7 has the lowest antibacterial effects against the mentioned strains among the cases studied. A wide range of phytochemical compounds were identified in the methanol extract of Salvia tebesana, which are responsible for the antioxidant properties and antibacterial activity of this plant. This plant has the potential to serve as a model for the development of new agents for pathological disorders.
